Chamber of Commerce
Does Swanage still have one? The link on here doesn't work.I need to contact someone about contributing to an article.Tried Googling it without success.
It appears the Chamber has both www.swanagechamber.co.uk and .org.uk.
The site is in process of being rebuilt and the new version appears at the .org.uk address. The other one has been taken down although I found it a few days ago.
The Chamber is a tiny organisation with about two dozen local businesses in membership. It is not exactly the central committee of the ruling class in Swanage.
Secretary Sandra Gent – 01929 424697, Brian Barker (Chairman) C/O Georgian Gems, - 01929 424697 Or Bob McGhee, Swanage Post Office – 01929 422461 active in the Chamber.
No-one needs to organise anything. It's simply up to local businesses to decide whether or not they wish to join the Chamber. If they don't see the point, that's up to them. If they think the Chamebr should do more (or differently), then they should join and change things. Up to them. It's a business thing.
If you want something, go for it and help. Nico (editor of the Gazette) has said this for years and years, there are too many people in Swanage complaining and not prepared to do anything to help. Brian Barker admits he takes the old fashioned approach.
All those that objected to the Marina, what did they offer instead to attract people here. Hope that the person who started this thread has lots of positive energy to invest in Swanage. It sure needs it.
Amongst others it is about buying power for bulk purchases, organising street events to generate trade, business advice, suggestions to fill the gaps in local shopping and making the community aware of the reasons for shopping local.
See link to The Hub, where I found these details (though web link does appear broken):

Mr Brian Barker - President
Contact - Sandra Gent - Secretary 01929 424697 info@swanagechamber.co.uk
Thank you. I've sent an email.
ReplyDeleteI tried an email, and that didn't work either! But I've emailed Ian Allen at The Hub who is involved with the Chamber..
ReplyDeleteThanks. My email has just bounced back too.
ReplyDeleteBest to talk to Brian at his shop Georgian Gems next to the Anchor. It looks like offers of web assistance would be gratefully received.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm not in Swanage but I have found his email address.
ReplyDeletePhoning the shop on +44 (0)1929 424697 might be quicker.
ReplyDeleteThis sums up the efficiency of the Dorset Chamber of Trade.
ReplyDeleteSuggest you meet them at the Conservative Club )aka Freemason's Lodge). Make sure you have at least four generations of Swanage in your family.
The Dorset Chamber is an entirely different organisation which rather makes the swipe at it absurd.
ReplyDeleteThe Freemason's Lodge isn't at the Conservative Club, that's just full of out of touch old people.
ReplyDeleteThere you have the better of me.
ReplyDeleteWhere do the in touch people gather?
1.56 If that were left up to DCC/PDC, it would have to be somewhere in Wareham.

Try one of these:
ReplyDeleteSecretary Sandra Gent – 01929 424697,
Brian Barker (Chairman) C/O Georgian Gems, - 01929 424697
Or Bob McGhee, Swanage Post Office – 01929 422461 active in the Chamber.
Wow. What a lame CofC.
ReplyDeleteMine in a town of 10000 have 200 members.
It is never off line.
Is Swanage clueless?
Any suggestions about how to emulate this?

ReplyDeleteWonder if the postman is a member
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Postman !

Yes I do, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI shall be putting pen to paper soon.
Thanks for all the advice and comments.

Thats interesting, can you tell us what it does for its members. Just telling us we are clueless in Swanage is not a lot of help.

ReplyDeleteThanks. I will pass that on to our Chamber.
