Coastal change exhibition Thursday 30 June/Sat 2nd July

Jurassic Coastal Change Exhibitions - Find out more about adapting to coastal erosion

The Jurassic Coastal Change Pathfinder Team are inviting residents and visitors to the Jurassic Coast to a series of exhibitions in June and July to find out more about how coastal erosion may affect them and the area in the future. The exhibitions will highlight the causes of coastal change, and show what the coast may look like in 20, 50 and 100 years time using specially commissioned, computer-generated images. They will also present some of the ideas that communities themselves have come up with to adapt to change, following workshops along the Jurassic Coast as part of the project.

The exhibition dates, times and venues are:

Swanage: Thursday 30 June and Saturday 2 July at the Mowlem Theatre Community Room, Swanage, BH19 1DD
Exhibition: 10am-9pm (Thur) and 10am-7pm (Sat)
Presentations at 1pm and 7pm (Thur) and 3pm (Sat)

DCC cuts support for School Transport

Context....DCC will no longer guarantee a place on the free school bus to Purbeck School, in direct contravention of the undertaking they gave when the abolished our 2 secondary schools in 1974. The six formers will now have to find £400 each to get to this poorly performing instution. swanage families are being effectively taxed for having children! In addition all children (and from next year that means 11yr olds too) will have to produce a pass or be refused travel. fine for most kids most of the time but we all know how chaotic some kids and families can be. and we all forget to put stuff in our bags...how mny kids will be roaming swanage every morning when that rule is enforced...but if you live in Whareham where you don't have to pay £400 for the privilide you can just stroll in to scholl as usual. DCC just doesn't give a **** about Swanage kids or any kids come to that. Swanage can become a retirement and second home haven for all they care.

Card pumps

Doing our green bit.

Just a thought , my girlfriend and I had to drive all the way over to Sandford to fill up with fuel. Now she said would it not be a great idea to put a card fuel machine at our local garages , so you could pay by card and not have to travel so far to buy fuel. Plus when tourists come down they would not run out of fuel driving all over the place. Just a thought!

Broadband

(This topic moved from Community Partnership)
Yes, download speeds are always the focus - but upload speeds are so incredibly poor. Fibre optic would enable both upload and download to be a great deal speedier than present. The copper wiring they have currently at the exchange, and which carries the speeds to your house, just aren't up to large streams of data. So changing this to fibre optic would give you much higher speeds. The issue with video conferencing is having quick upload speeds - ie using Skype to share screens and documents etc. Just trying to currently send any file larger than 200mb takes up to 2 hours + (if you're lucky).

There are a great deal of photographers in this area for instance, and I can only imagine their pain at having to wait hours to upload high quality resolution images. Imagine how this would be for large businesses trying to work over the exchange.

i think if we looked across the country, download speeds aren't brilliant, but - as you rightly say - upload speeds are never mentioned. I know they're laying the fibre optic in Bournemouth, so it really needs this council to step up and make a case (however realistic) for Swanage to get on a list - make it attractive to BT, tell them the businesses and home workers that would benefit. BT - as much as i hate them! - could be convinced to be part of providing employment for the local community etc.

I'm a filmmaker and attempting to upload my films (3min promo pieces, 300-400mb in the main) to YouTube and my website has proven to be almost impossible at times. Let alone actually sending the files to clients (I email via yousendit over night). You can get round the problems, but if a number of people were to upload large files to send at once, we would have a serious problem. I know of a fair few farmers who have been unable to send livestock forms etc back due to poor connections in more rural areas - downloading the forms are fine, but problems in uploading anything has proven to be very costly business wise. Add to that, once you have more home workers (should be the future with no new offices available in town or businesses willing to move here) sending files and creating websites to fill with content, the current system really won't be able to cope.

Sandbanks Ferry

An item on BBC Breakfast highlighted the high cost of tolls on the Humber Bridge, which have gone up from £2.70 to £3. The Humber bridge is over a mile long, (6,300 feet), and the distance to ‘go around’ some 50 miles plus. Sandbanks Chain Ferry on the other hand is £3.50 for 1,060 feet with a go around of circa 35 miles and the ferry itself is some 200 feet so only has to travel 800 feet. Seems like a rip off to me or is the toll fee based on Sandbanks earnings not Purbeck's ?
