  5. @Robin from Swanage:

I once knew of a man who beat his dog. If Robin from Swanage beats his dog, why should I listen to him.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Robin's question is a complete non-sequitur.

Why anyone stands for election with such cynics around astounds me. I say "Thank you for standing!"

    ReplyDelete
  7. I would like the successful Purbeck D. Councillors to address these issues.
Make sure that the public toilets at Shore Road are kept open for the advertised times and in the evening.
Restore a weekly refuse collection. There is money available from the Government to do this.
Prevent the new footpath signs from deteriorating. They cannot use creosote any more for health and safety reasons.
Carry out what they have promised to do.
(2nd attempt at proving I am not a robot)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Re the last post, I don't think it is quite as straight forward as that. There is a need to review the toilet opening times, survey the need by observation of entrance at various times of the day/evening and year and consider the level of vandalism.Council tax payers should not fund an underutilised and over vandalised amenity.

Is tax payers money really being well spent changing refuse collection times back to weekly? What are the benefits of fortnightly collections in various parts of the country? Where they are well established is there really a problem?

There are lots of creosote substitute products in all good DIY stores.

  9. Yes , my name's on the list.
    For reference, re Robin's comments:

Loos: responsibility of Town not District (a no-brainer though that they should be open when people are around. I remember when I was on the Town Council battling to get them opened on bank hols, weekends and school holidays: things better now)

Bin collection: IS PDC, though considerabel government influence I gather.

    Footpaths/signs: County Council

So here we go again , junk mail being put through our letter boxes.

This made me laugh from one of the candidates.

" I think we have solved the danger of campervans parking along the seafront and that i don't think Swanage is the right place for gypsy and traveller sites "

So everyone who has a camper van is a gypsy? Am I the only one thinking this. I personally think any kind of automobile parked along the seafront is a danger full stop. Though if people want to come to our town what is wrong with this? It's been suggest by our local paper that the car parks could have a fixed price for campervans to
stay over night that way bringing money into the town. Though place parking meters all the way along the
seafront aswell. I mean if you own a car , you should not
    own the road.

Anyway apart from that issue , the main one that
concerns me the most is of course affordable housing ,
yep that's right folks houses for locals with young
families who want to stay in Swanage. This should be on the top of all candidates agenda. So I ask them , what are you doing about this or can I say , are our councillors still taking back handers from developers to keep on building 1/ 2 bedroom penthouse flats or houses?

    Anyway

    ReplyDelete
  11. Dear Mr Furmage.

I should be very carefull in what you say. If I were a councillor I would now be seeing my solicitor re your comments on back handers. This post should be removed, as it is deflamatory. I doubt this will happen as you seem to be able to say what you like on this site, and not suffer the same censorship that others do.

  12. David Furmage19/4/12 3:57 pm

Sorry for bringing up a touchy subject and yep you are absolutey right , though I can remember if I am right a couple of years back a person who worked at the council offices in the Purbeck , who has now left said that these kind of deals have taken place. So only bringing up this subject for it to be answered in the best possible way , something I would actually like to see instead of lies lies and more lies , like the first poster stated :)

Though if the post is to be removed then fair enough ;)

  13. The election message from the incumbent candidate does not tell us much about what she has done as a District Councillor. I would be interested to see what the other candidates would do if elected.

I am pleased she thinks they have found a solution to the danger of camper vans parking on the seafront but I do not know what this has got to do with Purbeck Council. Nobody has solved the problem of camper vans parked in the nearby streets. It has dominated the Town Council debates for the last 15 years. Bournemouth solved it by putting parking signs for motorcycles and cars only.

With all the posts she is holding as well as looking after a family and doing a job I am surprised she finds time to be a District Concillor. There is a saying that if you want something done ask a busy person.

    ReplyDelete
  14. David Furmage19/4/12 7:06 pm

Yep that certainly solves the problem , so people who own a camper van you can't park it. Move on.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It has probably been sorted out by the Conservatives. What about the issues that relate to Purbeck District Council? What has been done and what will be done if the candidate gets elected? Was the candidate at the crucial meeting to decide whether to grant the funds for the Swanage Railway resignalling? Will the candidate make sure that the views of older people in Swanage are properly represented at Purbeck DC?

    ReplyDelete
  16. David Furmage19/4/12 9:50 pm

And also the young people of Swanage , families as they are the future of this town.

Though the question is whether it will change it's ways or wait for enough of us to express our discontent on election day

    ReplyDelete
  17. The incumbent candidate has already had 4 years to make sure that the views of younger people in Swanage were properly represented. Then she goes on to admit that little in that respect has changed. Is it likely to change in the next 4 years if she is reelected. What about the views of the golden oldies as well? Does she support the Wareham connection for the Swanage Railway? What is she going to do about antisocial behaviour and 24 hour drinking? Can she help to reduce the crime rate in Swanage and Wareham to the levels experienced in Dawlish, Yarmouth IOW, Budleigh Salterton, Beer and the Isles of Scilly?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Robin, dont you talk a load of tosh. 24 hr drinking I can do that at home it's the 24 hour licence, not the drinking. And if said councillor does not support the rail link what are you going to do, not vote for her, all tho she might tick all the other boxes.

If you want the levels of crime at those other place go live there. there are some wafflers on here and you take top spot so far!

    ReplyDelete
  19. We do not know what any of the candidates are going to do if elected. I will vote for the one that comes closest to my views.

I am not moving out of Swanage. The crime rate is much lower here than it was 12 years ago and I am going to continue to encourage the police, the Councils and the public to reduce it still further. There is no reason why we cannot reduce the crime rate in Swanage and Wareham to the level in Dawlish.

It is the first time I have ever been top at anything.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Could I ask the postman what he spends his backhanders on? Mr furmage has stated that you get/got them. Do you have a new car, holiday, home improvements? It would be nice to know.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Restore a weekly refuse collection.

Why not try to reduce, reuse and recycle ? Why do you need your landfill waste collected every week?

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is the first time I have ever been top at anything.

Well said Robin! Its good that you keep trying to change things for the better. Its people like you that make a positive difference. Keep going.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why not try to reduce, reuse and recycle ? Why do you need your landfill waste collected every week?
Because rycling is a farce in Purbeck!

    ReplyDelete
  24. David Furmage22/4/12 3:52 pm

I find recycling in swanage so easy. The tip on the outskirts of town is an awesome. Well run and well built aswell. So I find this issue is not really a problem.

Another issue which seems to be over looked though don't know weather or not the council can do anything about it is the eyesore and farce in the centre of town. The Mowlem. It's runned into the ground , it's an embarrassment , something needs to be done here asap. Either that pull it down to the shop levels and get rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anyone who could sort out the waste of space called the Mowlem would get my vote. An empty shell, under used and appears to be managed by some sort of syndicate with no drive or imagination. In its 60s hey day it had summer shows and a smart bar and restaurant. Times have moved on but the Mowlem hasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Does any one know how the Mowlem got planning permission?

    ReplyDelete
  27. It looks like Purbeck DC are going to collect plastic bottles in the fortnightly recycling collection.

I agree with some of the comments about the Mowlem but it has not got anything to do with the Purbeck DC election. We have already considered the Mowlem.

3rd attempt at proving I am not a robot

    ReplyDelete
  28. If this was a national election I would expect the Labour party to win. In Swanage it looks like the Conservatives will win, followed by the Liberals with Labour in third place. We still do not know what the Labour and Liberal parties plan to do in Purbeck if elected as they have not sent any election leaflets. Perhaps they have given up.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Robin, where in Swanage is open 24 hours a day for drinking?

Seriously? I doubt anywhere in Swanage even has a 24 hour license to serve alcohol.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I do not know as I have not attended all the licensing hearings. From memory some of the pubs in the Lower High Street applied to open until 03:00 and the people who lived nearby were not very happy about this. There was a problem with drink related anti-social behaviour in December in the Lower High Street. The people in Swanage do not seem to be concerned with this any more although the Police stats do not show any reduction in crime and there has been a lot of vandalism in the High Street.

The major issues in the Purbeck DC election seem to be household recycling and planning. Still no election address from the Labour party. Perhaps they should join forces with the Liberals if they do not want the Conservatives to win again.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Highly exaggerating the problem with vandalism and anti social behaviour Robin. I'm out most weekends and rarely see any.

I can think of one place that opens until 3am of a weekend and no where during the week. Most shut between 11pm and 1am.

I doubt any bar or pub in Swanage was granted a 24 hour licence and if they were they certainly aren't utilizing it.

Before you spout off about something I suggest you educate yourself first.

    ReplyDelete
  32. " exaggerating the problem with vandalism and anti social behaviour Robin. I'm out most weekends and rarely see any."

You've clearly missed the various public meetings where the Council, the Police, the Swanage Hospitality Association and businesses that have been vandalised or lost custom all agreed there is a serious problem in the lower High Street, not just weekends and often until the early hours (ie 4am). This is not fantasy and will not go away until the authorities take proper action; at the moment (as you may have noticed) they have increased police presence and are asking landlords to assist.... to little effect, I hear.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If its happening at 4am during the week it won't be anything to do with bars and pubs. They're all closed by 11pm Sunday-Thursday if they open at all.

What can landlords do to assist that?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Just not true... of course it's to do with pubs/clubs... I gather the club kicks out at 3.00 am and people are often still carousing and making a nuisance of themselves at 4 am as they wander slowly home through the town..

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ok, at the weekends yes the club closes at 3. However I know the people who run it, they refuse to serve and remove people causing a problem.

How responsible can they be for someone off their premises? How long after them leaving their premises should they be responsible for customers?

If I drink in the club, get drunk, go to my girlfriends, have a row and walk home an hour later angry and drunk and punch in a window how responsible is the club.

You also ignore one of my points. You state yourself that some of the vandalism happens on a weekday and at 4am. Now I know that it has also happened in the winter months.

I also know that the club doesn't open during the week and wasn't open on the nights these weekday vandalisms occured. Also the other pubs closed at around 11pm during the week as its quiet.

How can you blame the club and other pubs for those?

As someone who knows many of them, the majority of licence holders and landlords in town are good at their jobs, remove problem customers and issue bans.

Maybe you should be looking at teaching the problem makers, who are a minority and aren't all youngsters, to handle their drink and to respect other people and their property.

Also, say I own a pub and someone is clearly drunk. I refuse to serve them anymore and ask them to leave. They comply and leave, seemingly placid albeit drunk. They then smash a window 300 yards down the road. How and why am in any part responsible?

    ReplyDelete
  36. The latest figures from the police show the following crime rates per thousand in February:
    Swanage 5.22
    Dawlish 2.75
    Lizard 2.06
    Yarmouth Isle of Wight 1.38
    Isles of Scilly 0.95

Most of the crime in Swanage has occurred in the High Street and towards Herston. There have been hardly any crimes south of the High Street or north of the Railway line. It is in our interest to reduce the crime level to that experienced in the other places. We, as tax payers, have to pay for the police overtime, the damaged road signs and telephone boxes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes, I agree. Crime needs to be reduced but comparing us with other places seems a bit irrelevant. We may share similarities but I'm sure we are also very different.

You also fail to adress any of the points I raise.

Also what does that statistic show? I'm not having a go I just find it confusing. 5.22 crimes comitted for every 1000 people? Does it break down anywhere as to what type of crime?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anon 2.57 I should not worry about Robin he will as many others do confuse you and waffle on. As for mr hadley I think mike should get his facts right. He says all about these meeting and police do this and that, yet I know a few publicans that were not even aware of the said meetings, and their views are ignored when they are spoken to. It is only a very small minority that cause problems, 4 loud mouthed chavs can seem like an army at 3 am. I know a group of females (not ladies) that consume at least a bottle of wine each before they go out. So who is to blame Tesco where they get the wine for 3 bottles for a tenner? I lived for many years near the town centre pubs, I expected some noise, I allowed for that in my offer for the house, I researched this before I purchased, does that make me a genius? no just bloody sensible. The flip side is the pubs that dont give a damn they just keep on serving, and yes I do agree there are a couple. Is the kebab shop to blame? I popped in last week for an infusion of fat and calories. and it does attract some low lifes. that in my humble opinion is partly the owners fault and the people taking responsibility for their own actions. and please robin cut with the BS about 24 hr licencing you know nothing!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The Police have provided a break down of the crime figures for February. In Swanage 52 crimes were committed. 25 were anti social behaviour and 5 were violent crimes. In Dawlish, which is a similar town to Swanage, there were 33 crimes. 9 were anti social behaviour and 6 were violent crimes. In Yarmouth there were 4 crimes. 1 was anti social behaviour and 1 was violent.

If the community targeted anti social behaviour in Swanage the total crime rate could be reduced to an acceptable level. In my experience a lot of anti social behaviour has been committed by adults, some even by pillars of the community, and this sets a bad example for younger people. The anti social behaviour would have to be bad to get the police involved. Some of the people who have received ASBOS were over 60.

    ReplyDelete
  40. David Furmage26/4/12 1:15 am

And those people who are caught doing it should be put in a chain gang like in the States and be made to do their whatever service it is they do in town. Nice deterrent naming and shaming . Maybe go as far as to say have jumpsuits on with I.B.N on the back. Oh I.B.N stands for I've been naughty.:)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Tell you what robin to get what you want, why dont you buy a super heroes costume and go out around Swanage and save us all from this murderous hell of OAP asbo fiends just as you did in Dawlish. I hear they have erected a statue of you down there. What planet do you live on?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Another issue connected with the Purbeck DC election is the Swanage Railway. Looking through the minutes of the Purbeck DC meetings my elected representative did not attend the meeting on Tuesday 5th October 2010 about Wareham footbridge although 350 members of the public were present. She was also the only councillor who did not attend the crucial special meeting on Thusday 29th July 2010 at 12:25 at Westport House about the £3 million payment for the Worgret Junction resignalling project. As a result the Railway nearly lost the vote and forty years of hard work was nearly invalidated. May I please have an assurance from the prospective candidates that they will attend and represent our views at important meetings?

    ReplyDelete
  43. So Robin gets proved wrong and ignores the questions put to him?

Robin are you running in these elections? You sound like a politician.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Robin The railway is only a small part of this election, and my god you are certainly beating on about it. Perhaps some swanage railway people dont want to run the connection after all is not the railway a charity? perhaps they are worried about the costs incurred by running trains over network rails infastructure?

It' sblatanly obvious what we need is YOU on the council. Crime would diminish, pubs would not be allowed to open after 9pm marshall law on the lower high st. We would have 5 star toilets, and bst of all your crowning glory no words to type in to prove we are not robots!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Robin, I see in one of your earlier posts you said that you hadn’t received any election material from the Labour. I’m sorry if you haven't receive one of our leaflets already.

I’m the Labour party candidate in Swanage South. I’ve uploaded my election address to drop box and it’s available here: http://bit.ly/Ifc6gV in the next few days you should also receive a copy of this leaflet http://bit.ly/Ikzk6h which explains that only Labour have a realistic chance of beating the Conservatives in this election and highlights that the Lib Dem’s came in third place last year (not something you’d expect from the tone of their election leaflet). I’ve also sent a letter to postal voters, the text of which is available here http://bit.ly/IeTOhX

I think that the railway is an important part of Swanage and I’d like to see if connected to the main line as quickly as possible with a regular service running at least to Wareham and ideally beyond. I’ll do everything I can to support this if I’m elected.

You’re right that anti-social behaviour in the lower high street is a real issue. I know of a lot of windows that have been broken and I know that noise can be a big problem particularly on a Friday and Saturday night. If elected I will work to reduce these problems and to try and make Swanage an even more pleasant place to live.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Dera mr Roker. what action will you actually take re lower high st. Go on put pen to paer so to speak lets hear what you would do. How would you help the railway "reconnect" to the main line? what are your thoughts on Swanage market would it not be a good idea to bring it into station rd on a tuesday thus, giving local busines more footfall. lets acyually hear what a good little socialist would do rather than. waffle.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Moving the market to Station Road is an interesting idea which, so far as I am aware, has not received a public airing. Have you asked the other candidates, or anyone else for that matter, for their views? It certainly needs looking into. How many of the traders in Station Road are in favour, for example. Perhaps that would be a good starting point.

    ReplyDelete
  48. or anyone else for that matter, for their views.
    Yes.

. How many of the traders in Station Road are in favour.
    Some.

Its Mr Rokers view on the actual market that might make interesting reading. Lets hear what he has to say.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The shop owners in town should be asked first of their opinion re The Tuesday Market. Move it into town and you'll have gridlock every Tuesday plus lots of complaints from residents...ditto beach front especially in August.
Would a 'land train' be commercial to get around ?
Swanage Railway Wareham connection should be supported, however remembering first that its core business is as a heritage railway.
I see some of the writers here are blaming licensed premises, especially in the lower high street, of anti-social behaviour and vandalism. No excuse for either. However where does the blame start ? Is it the brewers, off licenses, Supermarkets etc ? Is it Harrow House students ? Or is it easiest to blame the pubs and bars, where a good many people of Swanage, have ended up sometime is their lives ? After all there has always been late drinking in Swanage (after time) as several of the writers mentioned above must remember! Older people seem to forget they were young once.
As I said above there is no excuse for bad behaviour and vandalism.
Social housing must be addressed so that the young people of the town have an incentive to stay.
Pick up a local paper of 40 years ago and the same issues and problems were being discussed.
Not moving very fast are we !

    ReplyDelete
  50. We have moved forward in the last 40 years. 40 years ago the Swanage Railway was a bare track bed. Swanage Town Council wanted to demolish the Station and Dorset County Council wanted to build a bypass on the railway line. It was inadvisable to swim in the sea. Now we have got the most advanced water treatment works in the World. Our beach had been washed away. Thanks to the beach recharge we have one of the best beaches on the south coast. Dulston Country Park did not exist. Now we have the newly opened Durlston Castle and heritage centre. We have always had problems with drunken behaviour and vandalism and it has taken 40 years to persuade the police that there is a problem. Now the police have noticed that drink-related criminal behaviour is rising in Swanage perhaps the police and Purbeck District Council will start addressing the issue.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Robin, when will stop dodging the questions asked to you re: earlier posts.

re: anti-social behaviour, go back and look, i won't repeat myself.

Like I said, you constantly dodge questions put to you, you should run in these elections as you certainly sound like a politician...

    ReplyDelete
  52. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yes I applaud the improvements made as detailed above by Robin from Swanage. However I wish someone had told me and thousands of others that it was inadvisable to swim in the sea! We used to go everyday in the summer but as far as I know no harm was done. Yes we have an advanced water treatment works but I question its location. We could have had a marina but the referendum in November 1987 democratically voted no. So we got a sewage works. Prime location !
Yes I also applaud the fantastic efforts of Swanage Railway and supported their effort from the start.
We were also fortunate with the 2005/06 Beach Replenishment Scheme in that we got a lovely beach for little cost.
Durlston. Yes brilliant and a great improvement.

Robin from Swanage you also mention above 'The crime rate is much lower here than it was 12 years ago and I am going to continue to encourage the police, the Councils and the public to reduce it still further' These are the years government have allowed longer opening hours !

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous, you asked what my views are on the idea of moving the market to station road. I think this is definitely an idea that is worth thinking about.

At the end of the day though, my personal thoughts on this issue, one way or the other, aren’t too important, and won’t get any more important if I’m elected on Thursday. This is the sort of decision that should only be made after consulting carefully with stall holders in the market, business owners in station road and the other parts of town that would be affected by the change as well as with residents. It would also be very sensible to try and get a better feel for whether such a move would positively affect the value of the business done at the market, the number of people who come to Swanage for the market and the amount of money that is spent locally.

I’m sure that you will accuse me of fence sitting when I say this but in the event that this sort of question was to fall to my judgment I would make any decision on the facts. As I don’t have all of the facts at the moment I couldn’t tell you what decision I would make.

I hope this answers your question.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Commments seem to be getting more and more personal and abusive. The purpose of this forum is to allow views to be expressed and exchanged. Just because your views differ from others is no excuse to abuse anyone. Some good points are being made, but in future I shall delete any posts which contain abusive references, which may be a shame, because I can't just edit out the abuse but have to delete the whole comment. Up to you. (And by the way I am the Postman, not Robin! Mike Hadley)

  57. The maths is simple. If either the Lib Dems or the Labour Party are going to beat the Conservatives in Swanage South they are going to have to join forces.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Where is the abuse? Probably just means more deleting of posts that don't fit your agenda.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't have all the results yet, but Swanage South:
    Alison Patrick (Con): 784
    Rupert Roker (Lab): 570
    Mike Hadley (Lib Dem): 250

(something like 30% fewer people than voted last year)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I gather that Gloria Marsh (Con) won Swanage North with 778 votes

    ReplyDelete
  61. DIDN'T VOTE

For the first time since I became eligible to vote 5 years ago I did not vote yesterday.

I recieved info from the 3 main parties about their 'promises' but they all attack each other and the promises they make are often unbelievable. Having never seen any of the candidates, it's not possible to make my mind up based on 3 pieces of paper.

What would people think about having a local debate, maybe at the Mowlem, between the candidates next time. With the turnout as low as it has been across the country, it would seem that more needs to be done to help people make their minds up about who to vote for.
    Cheers,
    Tom

  63. Anonymous @ 11.52 I'm sorry that you didn't receive a leaflet. All of Swanage should have received a copy of https://www.dropbox.com/s/qqhvvnyvdk2efnd/First%20Leaflet.pdf

Can you tell me which road you live on so that I can try and work out what went wrong and ensure that you do get information from your Labour candidate next time?
