Is this part of the councils master plan to keep visitors away, and drive everyone who cant afford a house with a drive out as well ? Of is it just so we all have to the use excelent public transport system? I think that there are still busses that leave the area once a week
Charging visitors to park on the street sounds like an excellent idea but I am not so struck on the charge for residents. Anyone near the sea in Swanage is, in effect, forced to live in a car park thoughout the summer months so why not get something into the municipal coffers in return.
Good riddance to any visitors who decide not to come here because they have to pay to park. If they are that stingy all we will get out of them if they do come is their litter, and that will no doubt be left for someone else to pick up.
Where else can you have a days free parking 100 yards from the beach?
The master plan is to make more money for Dorset County Council. Whether that makes life difficult for residents and ends up closing local shops is neither here nor there - if the council can get away with it. It's a typical local authority approach - with only a short-term narrow-vision view. If you go shopping in Poole supermarkets you already run into a host of people from Purbeck who really should be keeping their local stores going. But it's free to park at Tesco and Asda - and forcing people to pay during the day to park on the town centre roads in Swanage and Wareham will only send more and more driving over to Poole. Then councillors will say there should be an out of town store in Purbeck, probably in the green belt near Wareham, and that would solve everything - some of them are already expressing that view I'm sure. And then the specialist shops where you buy useful things will disappear and replacing them there'll be just more and more outlets where you can buy sticks of rock.
Free parking for the day near the sea? Easy..The disabled area near the bank. AS to paying for your own parking outside your house? Fine! Specially if you live near some of the Two Thousand holiday homes in Swanage...
