Did anyone else see the program last week on Channel 4 ( or was it BBC2 ?) about public sector pensions ?.
Anyway the startling fact came out that 26% of all council tax payments go towards final salary pensions for the public sector. And they retire at 60 !!!

Town hall workers can retire before they are 60. For a start there's the 85 rule. If your years in public service (service! for the public!) and yr age add up to 85, and if yr boss gives the okay, well out the door y go on yr handsome (compared to the rest of us) pension. And if you're rubbish and ought to be sacked, there are examples (i'm sure locally) of people going in their mid-50s with the council making the additional payments up so y get the full whack pension. There are some people in local govt doing a good job. There are many - too many - who aren't.
