Transportation Plan (congestion charge/bed tax)

Together with the controversial proposal for a Purbeck "congestion charge" is the proposal to put traffic lights at The Bakers Arms roundabout - junction of the A351 and A35.
This will have a crippling effect on traffic flow and during summer months we will have gridlock all the way back to Swanage instead of just to Wareham as we have at present.
Not only are traffic lights on roundabouts ludicrous, obstrctive, expensive, brainless and nannying they are downright dangerous.
That's my opinion and I would ask that anyone who shares it let DCC know before they proceed. Posted by Rowland Hughes 14 October

  1. Bed tax
And what about the 'bed tax'? Tucked away in the report is the idea of charging for every holiday bed (flat, hotel, B&B, campsite). Who knows, perhaps this might be a good idea - if the money came to the community. What annoys me is that the
subject of the bed tax is being obscured by the road issue and so is not being debated.

    Studland /ferry charge
Also, (as far as I could see) there's no mention of a congestion charge being made at the other entrance to Purbeck. When I spoke to Dorset County Council, they said "oh yes, that's just an oversight in the document. Of course people would have to be charged there as well."

    Full report
Don't be fobbed off by the brief A5 4 page document, The full thing is about 140 pages. If you want to see the full report, the library may have it. Or you can view it online at:

  2. Consultation meeting

The Swanage Advertiser carries an ad (page 4) inviting 'local businesses' to attend a meeting at 7pm on Thursday 21st October. But I'm sure any interested party can attend. I don't know if the Town Council is planning any proper consultation process. Does anyone know?

  3. Remember, since Jan 1, under the FOI Act,anyone can ask to see any recorded info held by any public body. So, thats the Purbeck Transportation Study, Pierhead, beach, jetty, old Grammar school plans, parking enforcement etc.etc. Everyone concerned about any of the above or, anything else should take full advantage.
They have 20 days to cough up.
