Want to join the Council?

If you want to have a say in what goes on in Swanage, there's a vacancy on the Town Council, with an election on 4th May. If you think you might want to stand, think quickly and get to the Town Hall on Monday (3rd April) before nominations close.

On a lighter note

May I just say how good I thought the concerts at the Parish Church have been over the last two weekends. Congratulations to the organizers and musicians. First we had the Isle of Purbeck String Festival and then a concert by the Dorset County Orchestra. It was pleasantly refreshing to hear a program including contemporary pieces.

Where did it all go wrong?

Perhaps all local councillors should be required to live in the area for at least 10 years before the can stand, then perhaps LOCAL issues will be dealt with, rather than semi retired people coming here with their outsider views, after all Swanage coped very well 30 + years ago.

New drinks license

I note the notice in the Advertiser, and on the premises, namely, One Quay House, 10 High Street, Swanage, for an application for yet another ‘sale of alcohol license’ both on and off the premises. Examination of the said premises they look too small to have a restaurant license, so they want to sell alcohol for STREET consumption up until midnight 7 days a week!

The 250 yards from Seymer Road along the Lower High Street already has at least a dozen licensed premises and is the seat of 95% of all anti social behaviour in Swanage.

With publicans acting responsibly to control under age or excessive consumption of alcohol the only purpose of such a licence must be to save the under-age drinkers nicking their fuel from their parents stock and having to carry it all the way to the Lower High Street.

In conclusion I note that the applicant who live as far away from the Lower High Street as is possible whilst still being in Swanage so why don’t they apply for a license in their part of town ?

Speed cameras

I saw in the local paper that the speed camera gang are going to be doing the rounds in Purbeck, it seems they have started over Stoborough yesterday (Sunday 19th March) as there was a van pointing a laser camera at all the cars !
I always thought it was illegal to point lasers at cars!

Mayor Miller - here today, gone tomorrow???

I'm hearing rumours galore regarding the recent resignation of Swanage's Mayor Miller, from all council positions.
Strange, as he only had 10 weeks to go, so what could have made him offer his resignation now?? Any information would be highly interesting....!!!

Conservation areas

There is supposed to be an exhibition about proposed changes to Swanage Conservation areas - in the Town Hall annexe today (3 March) until.......tomorrow Saturday 4 March.

Home guard?

With the recent TV programme on the Home Guard. It would be interesting to see how many Swanage men are still around that served in those far off days? OR even in the LDV. The Local defence Volunteers. LDV at the time stood for "Look, Duck, and Vanish"
