Mayor Miller - here today, gone tomorrow???
I'm hearing rumours galore regarding the recent resignation of Swanage's Mayor Miller, from all council positions.
Strange, as he only had 10 weeks to go, so what could have made him offer his resignation now?? Any information would be highly interesting....!!!

Press Release from Swanage Town Council
Swanage Town Council has been shocked by the surprise resignation of its Town Mayor, Councillor Tony Miller. In his letter of resignation Mr Miller outlines the increasing difficulty in balancing the demands from his various business interests and his work as a Town Councillor. He states “It is with much sorrow and regret that I tender my resignation as a Town Councillor. I would also take this opportunity to thank you (the ‘Town Clerk’) and all the staff for their hard work and support over the last 7 years.” Under his leadership in his role as Town Mayor Mr Miller has brought his wealth of business experience in leading the Council to a greatly improved financial position.
A strong advocate of reducing crime and disorder, he has worked very hard in the provision of CCTV in the Town as well as a host of new initiatives including the Swanage Town market. Being a keen supporter of provisions for local youth, he has nominated the play area and skate park projects at King George’s Field as his charity for the each of the past 4 years as Mayor.
Deputy Town Mayor Gary Suttle says “Tony will be much missed, his wealth of business experience has been invaluable throughout his tenure of Mayor. We hope that we will be able to continue the numerous good works and projects that he began and fulfil his hopes and aspirations for Swanage”.
The Town Council will now be required to elect and appoint a new Town Mayor from amongst currently serving town councillors. By resigning at this time Councillor Miller says he believes it will allow an election to take place on 4th May 2006, the date scheduled for District elections in Swanage and save substantial costs, estimated to be in the region of £3,500. The vacancy on the North Ward is required to be filled by law and an election called if notice is received by 10 or more of the electorate. If no election is called, the Town Council have to co-opt an individual to serve the outstanding 12 month period in office before the full Town Council elections due in 2007.

From Purbeck District Counicl website:
Mr Tony Miller
Mr Tony Miller, a local member for Swanage North, has resigned from Purbeck District Council with immediate effect due to increasing difficulties with balancing the calls on his time from his Council duties and his personal business interests.
Mr Miller has been a councillor at Purbeck Council for nearly six years and was most recently the Council’s Economy Spokesperson and Chairman of the Purbeck Sports Centre Committee.
Councillor Roy Anderson, Chairman of Purbeck District Council said: “Tony Miller has made a valuable contribution to both the Council and Purbeck and we thank him for all of his hard work over the last six years. We fully understand and support his reasons for resigning and wish him every success for the future”.
Mr Miller has also resigned as a councillor from Swanage Town Council where he has been the Town Mayor for the last four years.
A by-election will be held to fill Mr Miller’s district council seat on Thursday 4th May which coincides with the Council’s district elections. A by-election for his town council seat may also take place on that same day or a short time thereafter.
Tony and Julie may be gone, but will they continue to pull strings in the background?
Anyway, in the meantime I am reminded of the chorus from the musical “Oliver!”-
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
That’s the nicest thing that anyone ever done for me…
Local, concerned about their behaviour for many years.
Its the arrogance of these people that annoys me most. Swanage has a rotten borough culture based on the fact that these people know perfectly well the voters here would elect a two headed donkey if it stood on a tory ticket.
These events beg another question though. Tony Miller is not stupid. How was he persuaded to add to his original statement by saying that Julie was with him and not giving the two officers involved a handbagging? Thats effectively saying they were lying and meant that he and Julie had to go or they had to go. Theres no other way to read it. What made him do it?
I had a little chuckle to myself when I read THE POSTMAN @2-30 comments on Mr Miller that he was the councils economy spokesman did he mean with the truth or have I missed something
Concerning Mr Miller
If you have a few hours to spare please read the transcript of (the then) Cllr JW hearing.
Ex Cllr Wheeldon was found to have used abusive language to members of the public, council officers and consultants. There was a straightforward conflict of evidence. Ex Cllr Miller attempted to alibi ex Cllr Weeldon but the tribunal decided he was not telling the truth.
As they have both been found guilty of antisocial behavior and as they are both staunch advocates of law and order can we expect them to be the first people to demand the awarding of ASBOs against themselves? Or would I be right in thinking that something like this does not apply to them.
If a teenager used language, such as hers, at august members of the community we all know what would happen to them.
Is it true that all libdem councilors get splinters in their backside because they sit on the fence all the time ?
