Famous Swanage people

Still more.

Donald Hume: Chequebook journalism that would be worth millions today saw Hume, a black marketeer and dodgy car dealer, admitting to a gruesome murder after twice being acquitted.

He spent 17 years in Broadmoor?

And was born in Swanage.

Here's another.
Douglas Garman.

Garman was Education Organiser of the Communist Party from 1934-47, some sources say 1940 to 1950. He ran summer schools at Swanage and was involved in the South Wales Hunger March of 1936, which he reported on behalf of the Daily Worker.

Streuth, were we a Communist hotbed?

Here's one for George Willey.

Helen Muspratt (Dunman)

Born in India of an army family, she was sent to school in Britain. On her father’s retirement in 1922, the family lived in Swanage in Dorset. Having got to know a group of artists who had settled nearby, the career of photographer was suggested to her. She took a photography course in Regent’s Street Polytechnic in London.

She married Jack Dunman, a fellow Communist.

Whilst photography and politics only rarely meshed, she continued to be active in the Communist Party and in CND and Medical Aid for Vietnam.

If we're looking for famous people connected to Swanage then:

Ian Fleming - schooled in Langton
Tony Hancock - schooled in Swanage
David Mellor - schooled in Swanage
Mark Wallington - schooled, and I think lived in Swanage.
Does Jonathan Ross count?
I've heard a rumour that a Gibb, possibly Barry has bought the Wilkinson place in Studland.
I'm not sure about this one buuut, Robert Hardy - actor
Julia Somerville - Worth
Lord thingy, top legal Gov't guy - Worth

Or are we looking for famous commies, if we are my great Grandfather was writing to Keir-Hardie - and receiving replies - when the Labour party was being set up.

Or is it famous murderers. In which case I'm stumped.

Don't know how but I forgot but,
Wolf Willey - actor
CaVa CaVa - Top 40 charting band.

Paul Nash, the surrealist painter stayed here for some time in the 30s and considered moving here but in the end decided the locals were "unspeakable" and the trippers "beyond belief" so he went to Hampstead instead. He thought Swanage was the most surreal town in England. Seventy years on its even more surreal.

If we can have people who spent a period of time living here there are all the radar pioneers who lived in Swanage while working in Worth and Langton.

Several of the people who built the first computers have retired here and continue to take an active interest.

Thomas Hardy spent his first honeymoon here, staying in a cottage in Sentry Road but that does not really count. Enid Blyton, who Ihestitate to mention in the same paragraph of course.

Finally James Meade the economist was born here. He was awarded a Nobel prize in 1977 so he ought to be famous.

Hardy was meant to have lived here for 6 months - some honeymoon.

Peter Cockroft - schooled in Swanage.
Oh c'mon now, he presented the BBC weather for some years.

What about Mike Dicks?

Michael Dicks is managing director and chief economist, Europe, for Lehman Brothers in London. In this role, he has focused on raising the technical level of economics research carried out in City institutions to make it comparable with best-practice in central banking—by, for example, using large-scale macro-econometric models for forecasting and simulation. Previously he worked at the Bank of England and J.P. Morgan. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the London School of Economics.

I still see 'Uncle' Tony and 'Auntie' Jan (Dicks)

Meades was another of those lefties - what's gone wrong?

Don't forget Googie Withers.

Good point.
Jonners - of course.
One of my nephews used to do the garden of an ex corrie star.
The guy who had the wine bar in 'stenders - Wilmot-Brown?
I've got a strange? feeling that a Swanage girl appeared in Plaboy - or similar - late '70's, early '80's?

Tara Randall - soap star.

What happened to the Marsh lad who played for England U19's?

"If we can have people who spent a period of time living here there are all the radar pioneers who lived in Swanage while working in Worth and Langton".

One of my Great Uncles was one of their photographers, born here and then had to, maybe wanted to, go to Malvern.

Wolf Willey -actor- oh yes he played at being a landlord didnt he? not very well so I heard

I'd like to see you make that comment to his face. But then people like you can only talk behind people's backs, don't you?

Anonymous said...

all ready done it mate and worse so dont open your mouth unless your FULLY aware of the facts OK!
but then again people like you neglect to check them.

Yet again this blog sinks to depths of name calling and kindergarten behaviour - and the subject is Famous Swanage People!
But feel sorry for ANON. With all that cynicism, sneering and bitterness, we only have to read it on occasions - they're living it all the time!

Mike Dicks, Used to play wargames against him. I always lost. makes sense now

Anonymous said...

I guess it must be 20 years since I last saw him.
Still see most of his family tho.
Nice people.

Helen Muspratt has a whole load of pictures at the National Portrait Gallery - http://www.npg.org.uk/live/search/person.asp?LinkID=mp08150&role=art

If you know of any well known artists, writers or musicians, living, dead, or both, add those here too - there's a folder of images by Swanage & Purbeck artists being put together at the Quarr for a very exciting project being developed by Strata... it's got some great images in it!

You'll have to go in and ask to find out more! Unless Keith wants to post something about it here... Keith?

Joe Louis 'sparred' in Swanage.

Would that be David Hume the great Scottish philosopher? Didn't know he frequented these southerly shores.

Anyone for Charles Darwin?

Alec Guinness used to visit his Cousins.

I've checked up on David Hume and couldn't find him in our area.

Must have used a pseudonym

Basil Fawlty. Check it out ... in one episode he's asked where he comes from and he says "Swanage". I forget which one, but there's only twelve to search through.
