A recent thread asked what other festivals Swanage could consider, surely a comedy festival would be a great success, and I'm sure many of the contributors to the Swanage forums would go down a storm. Posted by Anonymous to swanage view at 11:03 PM

The Kings Bar put on Comedy Evenings on several occasions. Did anybody who reads this attend?
Oh dear, it always comes back to the same thing, doesn't it? To put on a festival, you need a huge amount of money to put up marquees, toilets etc, or you need a good sized indoor venue that doesn't cost the earth. Cue for the Mowlem debate again.
Yes, I have spoken to Steve D, and I was quite amazed at what he has to go through to put on his festivals. Did you know that there are businesses that give him a hard time for asking for £12 for an advert on his website? That some of them take out the advert, then make him wait 3 months, or even don't pay him the £12 at all? That some hotels have told him they should have an advert on his website but don't want to pay for it? Because without their hotel people coming to the festival wouldn't have anywhere to stay! That the chamber of commerce still hasn't contributed any money to him in the 7 years he's been doing the festivals? It's a wonder he's doing it at all, let alone considering another one as well.
Yes, it's true that some businesses have been less than helpful, some have refused to pay up, and some think it's an honour for me to advertise them free of charge. But, hey, that's true of SOME of them only!
There are also some very nice people in Swanage who are most helpful and supportive. If you look at the websites www.bluesroots.org and www.swanage-blues.org you'll see who does advertise... though you might be surprised at the businesses you don't see there.
But they do have a right to refuse to support the Blues Festivals – even for only £12 a year. I'm just glad that there are people who do help.
With regard to the Swanage & Purbeck Chamber of Commerce, you're quite right about them not ever having given me assistance of any kind. But then, do they give assistance to anybody else either?
I'm sure they have their purpose, but thank heavens we don't have to rely on them to have a good time or get things done!
I will continue to do my best with what I do, and to appreciate those who do help.
But a word to Anonymous: I would appreciate it if you kept our conversations to yourself and didn't publicise them to the world in future. Just in case you don't get them quite right.
Meanwhile, anybody who thinks it’s a good idea to extend the festival season in Swanage from the beginning of March to the beginning of October, thinks £12 is a reasonable amount for a whole year's advertising, and wants to support the October Festival, see www.bluesroots.org or phone me on 01929 422338. You don’t have to be a business to contribute either.
How about a "50 years ago" week which could cover the music, fashions, films, shows, debates, TV, cars etc etc of 50 years ago. There are always lots of people wanting to get nostalgic about when they were young and there are enough dimensions to it to cover all tastes from abstract painting to pop music.
The secret to putting on something is the bar takings. If whoever owns the venue benefits from the bar profits, they have a vested interest in attracting people to the event.

Is that why the Mowlem is under used?
FORTRAN was invented, it was a bitch to learn, but very effective once we had.
The Rushkis fired something into space.
Loads of twins were born in Dundee.
Was that when we'd "never had it so good"?
I'd best say that I'm too young to remember.
We have a constant and never ending "50 Years Ago" festival in Swanage. Why do we want to make it official? Let's have a festival of "Now".
Anybody who thinks organising anything in Swanage is easy, I can assure you it's not, it's an absolute headache.
That's why all organisers are invited to join the Association of Swanage & Purbeck Revelry Organisers - ASPRO
