Olympic brand

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said: "This is a truly innovative brand logo that graphically captures the essence of the London 2012 Olympic Games - namely to inspire young people around the world through sport and the Olympic values. The brand, designed by Wolff Olins, has been targeted at the young people the organisers hope will get involved. It is a deliberate change from previous Olympic logos, which often feature an image from the city. Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said: "This is an iconic brand that sums up what London 2012 is all about - an inclusive, welcoming and diverse Games that involves the whole country. It takes our values to the world beyond our shores, acting both as an invitation and an inspiration. This is not just a marketing logo, but a symbol that will become familiar, instantly recognisable and associated with our Games in so many ways during the next five years."

(Not Swanage I know, but a reminder: anyone got any ideas how Swanage might be able to benefit from people coming to the Olympics, especially those coming to the sailing in Weymouth?)

Build a marina

Build a marina? I agree.

In addition, and to adapt JFK, think not what the Olympics can do for us, but what we could do for the Olympics...

Is there time to train a handful of Swanage youngsters to be potential sailing champions? Can we raise a beach volleyball team? [Form a queue, gentlemen!] Is it too late to get gig racing accepted as a demonstration sport?

The Olympics are a complete waste of our money. We should have referendums on things like this, our health service cant afford life saving drugs and the government squanders money on this nonesense.

I couldn't find anyhting on their website but I remember it being mooted that Gig racing could be adopted, and surely, done properly, that would help Swanage.

There was a time when impoverished third world commonwealth countries would plead not to be subjected to a visit by the Queen, saying they just couldn't afford it.
Now the Olympics is going the same way.
The modest benefits of publicity and an influx of tourism are lagging behind the cost to the host country in terms of putting in massive sporting and transport infrastructure.
China will be getting something significant out of it, its benefit is in being seen as a player on the international stage.
But the UK?
Well there'll be improvements in London which wouldn't have been there.
It'll be costing billions more than is even now being admitted to.
Weymouth?
It might, might, get a road access that it should have had years ago.
But damn all else.
Except debt and embarrassment.
It'll be Tony Blair's legacy.
Cool Britannia to Fool Britannia.
