The Mowlem

Next time you walk past the Mowlem, look at the concrete that overhangs the sea. That's not good

Someone drew my attention to this posting.

A section of concrete has been removed by contractors to assess the deterioration and weather damage. Nothing fell and we are assured all is safe.

Comments like this are unhelpful as was the action of a member of the public who complained to PDC.

It would be far more responsible to report it to a member of staff or Trustee then if there had been a problem and un-noticed, prompt action would have been taken.

Why would anyone want to report it to a trustee. Surely they are responsible for the disastrous state of the building in the first place.

Like the prompt action to paint the building and the prompt action to rescue the toilets, Mr Bale?

Oh dear oh dear. A trustee looks down from their olympian heights and has their attention drawn to this blog. Not that they found it themselves of course. Wonder how you get the butler to iron a blog before it is fit to read.

What this exchange demonstrates is the level of confidence many Swanage people have in the trustees and the fact that the trustees make no attempt to communicate with the public, either by keeping their website up to date with news or by the simple expedient of putting a note in the window saying what was happening.

the trustees should be ashamed.....they are not doing their job and the whole place becomes more of an eyesore year on year. No wonder Hall and Woodhouse gave up ! Fresh blood and a commercial approach is needed urgently to save this facility for residents and visitors alike.

NO doubt the mowlem is suffering from a lack of funds but why o why don't the trustees put on some events that will pay their way. How about utilising the mowlem for music concerts. There must be plenty of local talent. How about educational events on the Jurassic Coast? Is anything happening about the bars and restaurant?

Am I living in an alternate universe to George Willey.

In the Advertiser he says quote "ageing Mowlem is finally getting the six figure makover...It has now got it !! The seafront building is splendidly smartened up, within and without."

I would be grateful for the actual co ordinates for this particular universe so I can set my spaceship to the location and see it for myself.

The fact that the Mowlem doesn't participate in Purbeck Film Festival says it all.
The mentality of the trustees is so uncreative. Take the new seating: There was the opportunity to take out a few seats and space them out a bit, even settees and arm chairs in the stalls instead. But no. Just replace the old with the same.

It would be nice of someone, on behalf of the trustees could tell us why there is no artistic director or similar post here. When you look at the staffing arrangements at other Dorset venues, e.g. Bridport Art Centre, Marine Theatre Lyme these are the principal posts. They can hardly expect the place to be used if it is not somebodies job to get bums on seats.

The current trustees lack any imagination and are probably just part of the community who want nothing to ever change in the town. How the building was agreed and built in the first place during the 60s in a town where most ideas always come to nothing is a miracle. Obvioiusly trustees from a previous generation had a little more get up and go......
