Co-operative Group to close Somerfield
Peter Marks, the chief executive of The Co-operative Group, has revealed that he plans to close Somerfield's head office in Bristol next year, putting hundreds of jobs at risk, and that it will take "at least two years" to convert more than 650 Somerfield stores to its own brand.
I didn't think Somerfield was particulary expensive. Do you mean they sell expensive goods or charge more than other shops for the same thing? Its not the same thing. Caviar is expensive but a shop could have that and sell their baked beans for less than the competition. Can't say I was over impressed by Budgens though. Last time I went into one there was a lot of the pre-digested stuff for people who can't cook and not much in the way of real food. I know - we all have such busy lives these days that we buy ready meals at high prices as all our time goes on working to pay over the odds for food! Funny old world.
It was comments by other people I have read on various sites over the years that made me say that local people find Somerfields expensive.
I like Somerfields. I really enjoy the fresh rolls they sell, and they have a nice variety of bread. The rolls are sold as 4 for a £1.. Singularly they are 35p each..
Budgens do the same rolls at 49p each, no bulk buy price..
Are they the same? The Co-ops 38p white rolls have more substance than Somerfields 35p offering for example, although 49p is a scarey amount for a roll. It will be interesting to see what they think they can charge here as most chins have different prices at different locations. Heck, I am descending into the type of exchange we used to see on another forum. Sorry....
Budgens is expensive, no matter how you slice it...
Since Somerfields Wareham and Swanage are both served by one delivery lorry, why not entice one of the big players (Tesco, Sainsburys etc) to open both shops as 'Express' supermarkets?
Why can't Wilkinsons (which more or less destroyed Woolworths) take over sites such as Swanage and run 'Wilkos Express' to serve us with those day to day items we used to get from good old Woollies??
Anyone wanting to know the date of the takeover should ask in Somerfield. Its sometime in May but I do not remember the exact date. They will be closed for a couple of days. Wareham Somerfield is to be closed for rather longer and will be reborn as Sainsburys so at least we will have a little more choice.
why don't we just use this space for local 'Purbeck Producers',or similar to Lyme Regis-what about a wonderful wholefood/home bakery with huge banqueting pine tables and jugs of apple juice, wonderful music and great conversation! Get creating-Swanage-loads of potential to improve!!! It could be a wonderful place to visit, lets dig ourselves out of this grey depression! Budgeons, mmmm doesn't sound too inspiring does it??
Can I just praise the staff and pass on my thanks to you all, the two guys on the door after closing and the pretty till girl. My wife, for some reason was unable to use her card on the till and I was waiting for a train in the station waiting room. She managed to get hold of me and not only did we manage to buy our goods after closing time but caught the train with seconds to spare. Very glad you are nice helpful people and not jobsworth dummies. Thank you again, the harper clan.

If Coop are converting all the Somerfields, they must be planning to sell Somerfield in Swanage otherwise we would have two Coops !
Yet more job losses which the town dosnt need.

Thats all a bit oddas the staff were told it will become a Budgens in May.
What´s odd about it?
Wareham´s one of ´em.
(No, not the whole town)
I heard: Somerfield in Swanage to become Budgens, Somerfield in Wareham to become Sainsburys
So, its change without difference for Swanage.
I think it is a big change, if you thought Somerfields was expensive, try Budgens.....

Just an example that I have noticed.

Somewhat off topic but-
Why can't Wilkinsons (which more or less destroyed Woolworths) take over sites such as Swanage and run 'Wilkos Express' to serve us with those day to day items we used to get from good old Woollies??
Anything but Tesco please.
OK then how about Waitrose??
Waitrose is even more expensive (but good0 than anyone!
