What is The Purbeck Society? How do you join, what does it do, how many members does it have?

There are a few things that come up when you Google it.... but nothing to tell you what it is... It was founded in 18 something or other.... very mysterious....
??? I googled and the first item in the results is a link to a letter they wrote to pdc. The google result includes "THE PURBECK SOCIETY. Chairman : Michael Stollery, Dip Arch, RIBA. Please reply to: 52 Victoria Avenue. Swanage. BH19 1AP"
Didn't even need to follow the link to get the name and address.
Isn't that the Purbeck Arts Club? I have never noticed the Purbeck Society down there. Best contact the gent in Victorian Avenue. Any volunteers to build them a website?
I reckon is it the new name for Swanage's Masonic Lodge....aka Town Hall (if you don't believe me, examine the walls of the TH meeting room for Masonic references. A member of the Council happily explained their meaning to me before a meeting).
Would anybody like to lodge (sic) a Freedom of Information Act request for masonic membership of all Town Officers (and in the case of women, their spouses)? Might be interesting.
The Purbeck Society has over 300 members. It has a very able committee and seems to have taken over the role of the voice of Swanage from the Swanage Residents Association. The members seem very passive. It also seems to have taken over the role of the Swanage Buildings Preservation Group. The group organises talks in the Mowlem Committee Room in Winter and coach trips in summer. It could end up as a formidable pressure group with the members rubber stamping whatever the committee decides.
If they want to represent anyone in the 21st century, why on earth can't they have a website, or even a blog (like this, that would take ten minutes to set up), or perhaps a facebook page...
The Purbeck Society, the Isle of Purbeck Model Railway Group and the Swanage Town Twinning Association do not have web sites because none of the members have got the technical skills to create one. It may take someone who knows what they are doing 10 minutes to create one but it took several weeks for the Swanage Walking Group to make theirs. The instruction manuals are very difficult to follow and it costs a lot of money to pay for someone to create a web site.

I think they have an office in Commercial Road, near the Gazette offices. And people can rent the space too, I believe.

It really is easy to set up a blog: go to www.blogger.com and follow the simple instructions.
Thought you'd like to know the Purbeck Society now has a website: www.purbecksociety.co.uk
