Local Economy and government

Can somebody from the 70's throw some light on the discussions that took place at this time re Purbeck this side of the bridge having its own local gov and economy ! Ive heard something about it but wasn't old enough to be engaged in the discussions at this time. It would be interesting to hear how far this got?

Oh, wow, man, the '70's. We had heavy, we had progressive, we had glam, we had disco, we had punk, we had dope, we had speed, and AIDS hadn't been invented.

Uh, like, yeah, we had fun.

However, moving on, Before '74 Swanage was an Urban council and had power. Viscount Cranborne, under the Tories, was charged with restructuring Local gov't. What we have now is his conclusion. Power was centralised at District level and at County level in an attempt to make we poor 'umble tax payers more free.

The people of Purbeck chatted about cutting the rest the country off from us, usually after the third pint the barricades had been manned!

The only bit that I remember clearly is that when the oil was discovered at Wytch then a group of people got together to discuss independence.

They seemed to forget that the oil field is known as the Sherwood field, cuz it runs from Sherwood forest S, and W and E.

It's just nearest the surface at Wytch and nicely close to Fawley.

Even if we had been able to fund the extraction, I think that BP et al could have funded bigger machines to get the oil to Fawley a bit quicker than we could.

We certainly have loads of farmland and could have gone a long way to feeding ourselves - so long as the farmers played ball, there were no blites, or plaques and the farmers ignored EU payments.

Oh, yeah, we also had to assume that the gov't would just shrug their shoulders and say - pah, who needs them! Typically English response - eh!

Mind you, I was listening to loud music, taking drugs and trying to fumble with the surprisingly resistant opposite sex.

Can anyone else elucidate?

Did these original rumblings take place in the Black Swan. What happened to you all have you been 'out of your heads' for the past 40 years, have you nothing sensible left to contribute !

Local authority districts range from a population of 176,000 down to 35,500. Purbeck is second smallest. It exists because the other options looked worse, for example bundling it into East Dorset (86,000) or even Poole. When the possibility of a unitary Dorset authority was considered more recently it was rejected because the seat of local government would be too distant. We struggle with the consequences of a council too small to do its job properly. 1200 households on the council list (not 1200 individuals) and a council that was dismissed as being unable to recognise good homelessness practice if it saw it in an official report a few years ago.

A mini-purbeck dc was never a real option but was a nice bar room topic.
