I recall that the Swanage Town and Community Partnership was involved in a survey about this. I'll try to find out more.

It will no longer be a problem when we have a new hospital at Herston.

I would have thought that sitting in heavy traffic leaving the town via Herston after 3pm during the summer would have been equally nightmareish. Presumably cars, buses and taxis bound for the proposed hospital would be help up too?

'It will no longer be a problem when we have a new hospital at Herston'.

Should this not read 'if we have a new hospital at Herston?' Does 9.48 know something that the rest of us don't?

Just reverse Church Hill for light traffic. Simples!

Turning it into a postitive - we are lucky to have a hospital-hope that's not the next thing that is threatened with closure !!

to the second comment

WE DO NOT WANT A NEW HOSPITAL AT HERSTON.

thank you very much, the hospital is fine where it is, it's a lovely hospital that has just had loads of money spent on the new section, and parking up there is easy. keep it where it is.

SAVE HERSTON FIELDS!

who is the "WE" I want a new hospital at herston so should it have read I dont want a new hospital at herston.

And dont we have this argument/discussion every year after the summer?

"We" are the majority of the people who live at Herston and use the fields.

As far as I know this is the first time the 'new hospital' has been discuss, not every year. It wasn't on the cards 2 years ago as the area concerned was protected by being within a conservation area, funny how that was lifted and suddenly a new hospital is being planned along with 200 houses, think about how much that will affect the traffic flow in and around the town and the Isle of Purbeck.

SAVE HERSTON FEILDS

It's a bit like the parish vote on the marina, if the short sighted NIMBY locals always get their way nothing will happen.

So herston is the majority of Swanage? ok I suppose that means you have 51% of the population within the herston area therefore we dont need a hospital.

And the point I was making about discussing this every year is the one about access to the hospital via town centre in the summer months. God every topic is turning into saving herston fields, ergo "flood plain" in another thread.

Perhaps we should start a new group "Build a new medical centre"

Excuse me Mr 12:19
Did you mean that all locals are short sighted Nymbys. or
just the short sighted Nymbys

Funny the way people clutch at straws.

Traffic jams in Herston - try getting up to the hospital at the same time.

They might close the hospital - they will - if they get a new one.

Parking is easy on Queens/Bon Accord Rd - unless your disabled.

Removal of the conservation area - well, if you kept up with what's happening in our community, you could have complained then, but you didn't ......

But anyway, this is a thread about traffic flow.

Reverse the High St from Court Hill to the Black Swan

The departmental guidance, AKA rules, for conservation areas were changed and they became restricted to the built environment. In any case there is nothing preventing new buildings in a conservation area. That is not what they are for so it does not make a huge amount of difference.

Dear 10.10 PM

Herston fields lie within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) so that SHOULD make a difference.

Travel from Wareham to Swanage - one thing we are not short of is fields. What is all the fuss about?

NIMBY's wonder what the inhabitants thought when they build the benleaze estate? where I suspect most of the compainers live.

Anonymous said...

Please try and get past the NIMBY accusation. I am told that to date 2760 people have signed the Save Herston Fields petition which is over a quarter of the population of Swanage.

And you can gaurantee they all live IN Swanage?

Anonymous said...

Petitions are largely a waste of time.

You start one and all your family and friends sign it, they then tell other people, many of whom will sign it so they don't offend their friends, many other people will sign it to avoid embarrassment, and many will sign it when they don't have the faintest idea what it's all about.

Nearly everyone I've spoken to says, yes we need more affordable housing, but not there. Their suggestions as to where these houses can be built are usually ridiculous.

ALL those empty flats in the centre of town.

It's a handful, and many are not suited to young families, or the elderly.

Get rid of Second Home Owners.

Not gunna happen.

Stop people knocking big homes into flats.

The big homes won't sell easily, and certainly not to most locals.

More housing is needed, there are two possible sites.

It comes down to priorities.

1 the need for more homes.

2 the need for a nice view.

To me 1 wins.

Of course they're NIMBY's!

Perhaps I could build a house in your back garden? You wouldn't mind would you?

There is a new term now anyway, Lamby! Looking After My Back Yard.

More housing = more traffic, so lets get back on-topic? Perhaps what Purbeck needs is a congestion charge!

"Perhaps I could build a house in your back garden? You wouldn't mind would you?"

When can you start? I want at least £250,000 for the land and getting planning permission is your problem. I would rather you sold it as a second home to someone with a decent amount of money so that there is likely to be an ongoing input into the local economy from them. Houses on similar size plots sell for a touch less than £500k so with building costs at about £1000 a square metre a three bedder will yield a decent profit.

Good to see that from the many comments here the tide of opinion is going FOR the houses at Herston. Also whilst a quarter of the population are against, perhaps three quarters are for or at least dont mind the development. The house building will bring some empolyment for local people and encourage some new businesses nearby, as well as profiting existing others. It is always a pity to see houses replace fields anywhere, but whilst people are living longer and the population continues to grow through a steady birthrate there is not really much of an alternative. Perhaps we are fortunate that Swanage is not closer to major towns, airports etc as that would greatly accelerate the house building programmes.

5.29 Good post. Houses have to go somewhere.

It is not as though we are infilling one of the last bits of open land (such as Talbot Heath). Even with this new development there will be at least a mile of open farmland, downland and hills beyond. It is hardly catastrophic.

In any event, I feel sorry for the new residents of these homes to have to look at the ex-council development across the road - hardly attractive.

No thanks. I wouldn't want you as a neighbour. Enjoy your 'garden'.

Oh dear 12.39 clearly a bit of a site mix up here.

Dear me. I think it is quite unjust that I have a large garden which could be built on and the house on it owned by someone with money to spend with local businesses.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, forgot to add that if there was encouragement to build on back gardens there be less need for green field developments like on Herston Fields. Similarly if every block of flats had been one floor higher.

Anonymous said...

Planning restrictions - the Tories want to stop 'garden grabbing'

Anonymous said...

Far be it from me to question the wisdom of their judgement. You can either have more houses or keep everything the same but not both. If the outcome is fewer houses built prices will be higher. If our fields are sacrosanct, our building heights fixed for all time and our gardens to be kept as gardens we could well be stuffed.

But what about the thorny issue of second home ownership?

"But what about the thorny issue of second home ownership?"

What indeed. I think it is something we have to live with. Of course, I may be confounded if a government claiming to be dedicated to bringing about less regulation and government interference does a volte face and decides to regulate the housing market. Formations of flying pigs may also be observed over the bay. The probabilities are much the same.
