Another example of co-ordination and forward planning. The Sandbanks Ferry is is going to be off for most of November for maintenance and the railway bridge at Norden will be under repair at the same time with traffic controlled by lights and a 40 mile an hour speed limit. How on earth the Highways people at DCC did not twist arms to avoid this I do not know. You would think it was an elementary enough intervention to make.

I thought that the bridge was this month and the ferry the next ....
Ah, we will truly become the 'Isle' of Purbeck!
The notice by the bridge says 8 weeks beginning 4 October so if it takes that time they overlap. Perhaps the Waverley could bring in food parcels.
Humour noted, but they always overestimate 'just in case'.
I see the speed limit will remain in force for longer than the work will take.
"they always overestimate 'just in case'."
I hope so. By the way, it always amuses me when the ferry is off and we have predictions of jams on the A351. In fact when you work out how many cars an hour the ferry actually carries at this time of year it works out at about one a minute for most of the day, however, the two together are a deterrent to anyone coming here for the day so our tills will be quieter than normal.
They started on the Wareham roundabout today (mon)
Yeah 1hr 10mins is the average time to clear the line of traffic. Its going all the way back to the Bakers Arms.
Teach you to be on 4 wheels!
Time to get the train running then!!
lets have lots of new houses and a supermarket, then all will be tickery boo, one could always try walking like they did in the good old days
Massive superstore at Worgret - great! No more Budgens; no more Co-op; no more Boots; no more tatty pound shops selling bitz of Burt. Can't wait - and lots of jobs paying next to nought for our kids. Cheap booze. It's got to be good! Social point of the Purbecks! Hope it has a cafe - cheap food too. All day full English fried breakfast - good'un! Hope it offers cheap petrol, too, cuz then no one will shop in Swanage. Even better when the train is hooked up to Worgret - we can catch the choo choo to get all our goodies! Can't wait! What the manager at the Co-op (such a cheerful bloke) watch his profits tumble.
Just got back from the council meeting at PDC (adjourned at midnight). The supermarket proposal was thrown out.
Shocked, but pleasantly surprised!
Get yourself a good nights kip and then please update those of us who just couldn't be bothered to go.
Good to see that Wareham people support each other, (small business, the Chamber of Trade and the community) and that there is an understanding in Wareham that to open an out of Town Supermarket would destroy local shops that provide local employment and small diverse, personal businesses.
Are their views backward thinking, I don't think so.
The upshot being that the two thirds of Wareham shoppers who eschew the local offering will continue to clog the A351 en route to Tesco, Asda etc. The overwhelming majority are not persuaded by the argument that they should use local shops. Why do bloggers think that is? Is it brainwashing, is it a rational choice based on price and choice? If it is the former whose job is it to convince them they are wrong?
Local jobs in wareham? As in the chip shops, pubs or gift shops that all appear to be closed on a wednesday or at 4pm? That isn't a lot for people to hope for when raising a family is there. There needs to be investment in businesses that can provide jobs for more than one or two people at a time.
The two mini-markets in the town haven't destroyed Wareham, so why would a supermarket up the road? People need choice, and it frankly isn't there in Wareham.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Rex, I love some of the pubs and the view from the bridge, but visitors always park up, have a wander round before saying 'well, is this it?'. Fine for locals, but you need money coming in - and housing and new industry is the only way that's going to happen.
There's always been a fear that change will rip out the heart of small towns and villages, but i think the worst thing is in being selfish and not providing a future for families and their children.
