I was somewhat surprised to read on the Telegraph that it is unlawful for councils to use parking charges as a revenue raising exercise. See http://tinyurl.com/38bozuh

The local government association says “Money raised from parking is retained locally for funding things like road maintenance, street lighting and parking enforcement. The motorists who pay for parking benefit from the things it pays for.”

“Councils can’t use parking as a revenue raising exercise but they should have the freedom to set charges at a level which covers the cost of providing parking. That cost varies in different parts of the country and councils will make decisions based on local factors."

Since STC does not mend the roads etc., and uses parking charges as a fund raiser for their general spending they would appear to be acting unlawfully. Any thoughts Mr Postman?; 3/1/11 11:06 pm
Anonymous said...: When visiting Wales, we found many of the Car Parks were free. What a lovely welcome for tourists and locals alike. Visitors parked, walked and then had money left to spend in the local shops/pubs and restaurants, instead of being ripped off, by either council parking fees or National Trust.

Also prescriptions and a tuition fees free too. Is Wales any more in a mess financially than we are, how does Wales manage to provide these free services??; 3/1/11 11:38 pm
Anonymous said...: Swanage Town Council has acted in the past along the lines of 'do as we want until we get caught'. Consult the rulings of the District Auditor for proof of this. Swanage had to sell its biggest asset due to this line of 'thinking' (sic).; 4/1/11 1:04 am

Seen George Willey's review of the panto in the Advertiser!? Must have seen a different performance from the one I went to. He said it ripped along at a merry pace. Seemed to drag on forever to me. Good individual performances but what a tediously long production. I left at the interval, after ninety very slow minutes, with my kid constantly asking if it had finished yet. I gather the whole show was 3 hours long.; 19/1/11 3:34 pm

Sand from the beach

Why is it we paid through our taxes to have the beach redone with new sand a few years back. Though some of it is still on the roads from last weeks easterly winds. Are we just going to let the beach creep onto the roads now?

FROG SPAWN ARRIVES A MONTH EARLY IN SWANAGE, (Peveril Heights). Last year was the 16th March and 2009 was the 3rd March.

Check your garden ponds.
