Welcome to Swanage

Congratulations to Swanage Town Council for the new welcome signs in the car parks. This is something I proposed a while ago, and I believe will be a great help to visitors. Now have to keep pressure on for my other idea, to sweeten the pill for those who find the parking prices too high: to have a car park ticket lottery, whereby you write your phone number on the back of your ticket when you leave, place it in a box provided, and every day or week someone wins £20 (or more). But that was rejected the three times I proposed it, as being 'unworkable'.

Excellent picture. My parents and I did not find the No Excuse Accepted sign in the Mermond Place car park provided a good first impression for visitors. Someone suggested the car parks should be free and the Council should charge for street parking so the streets would be free of parked cars. The toilets in the car parks should be kept open later in the evening. The car parks are too expensive and it is always possible to find a free car parking space on the road. I am not too keen on the lottery idea. The winner could be miles away when the draw takes place.

Thing is the car parks are the major source of income for the Town Council, now the caravan park is out of the picture. And parking on the streets is regulated (and any fees taken) by the County Council. Agree that loos should be kept open later (and I think they should be free as well). As far as the lottery idea, prizes would be sent to winners to wherever they are.

The TC got 7.5 million from the sale of the lease of the caravan park. The former Town Clerk and Mayor were adamant that the income from the investment would far outpace the income from the park.

Or did they tell a lie???

How much of the 7.5 million is still capital, and how much had been spent?

Why not include entrance to the Pier in price of parking, and a scheme to get your parking fee back when you spend x amount in certain shops/restaurants?

There is no mention of staying over night.

Good idea anonymous 18/3/12 8.09 AM. The Town Council analyses all the parking ticket sales every year. Someone bought a weekly ticket at 23:45. The Town Clerk was surprised more people did not buy a weekly ticket as it was excellent value for money. If there was a lottery people would have a better chance of winning if they bought a ticket every day. Do you like the flower pots painted by the girl guides in the Main Beach car park?
