could well be... but I was nothing at all to do with the council that voted to spend all that money (was it £500,000?) on building a luxury 5-star restaurant in a caravan park..talk about risking ratepayers' money!
It's the old story of a local council thinking they can make money as a business, when really they are in the position to create an environment where free enterprise will flourish. Basically the then mayor had delusions of catering grandeur and shelled out thousands of locals money on an upmarket restaurant. Apparently he used it as his private dining room. He suggested that it would replace the need for local rates. "soon be in the Michelin and all the other gourmet guides" wrote Tilly Whim. Needless to say it bust in a few months. Thank God we have an accountant at the helm now!
May have an accountant at the helm now but things are no better. The caravan park is apparently losing money like nobody's business. Rumours of dodgy behaviour and god knows what going on.
What do you mean by the phrase ratepayers money? Do you mean it is money from rate receipts or do you mean it forms part of Town Council borrowing and is thus borrowed by the ratepayers? The fact is nobody has gone into where the money invested in the restaurant came from, for example it was probably not rate payers money at all as councils are expressly forbidden to risk this in commercial enterprises. Why not find out whether it was operating surplus from the caravan site for example or whether it was borrowed by the site as a commercial loan. I do wish posters would base their opinions on facts and would establish those facts first. It would give their views a great deal more credibility.
Risking the ratepayers money in the way suggested is a serious offence that would end the career of any politician. Its as bad as bullying the staff and we all know where that ended up. Making an unfounded allegation could get you in deep water.
It's not an unfounded allegation- it happened. Just like they have got the land behind the Old Grammar School for football pitches but never use it. Just like they let the supermarket get built on Station Yard and lost money on the deal. Just like the Heritage centre closes for lunch. Just like they put out the ice cream huts on the beach for tender instead of getting rid of them. Just like they charge Summer rates in the car parks weeks before closing Shore Road to traffic. Just like etc etc
I thought the audit people were the ones who said the council shouldn't be running a carvan park at all because it was wrong to risk the public's money. Which is why they are still trying to fins a different way of doing things.

I know Mike, but I felt it was only fair to apologise, cuz not everyone remembers.
I keep hearing references to this huge sum of money being spent - is this documented anywhere? I'd love to know the whole story.

I think we've probably all heard similar rumours, but is there actually proof?
I doubt it or the audit boys would have hammered them - wouldn't they?
