Romour at work that 14 Police Units - whatever they may be - were active in Swanage sometime in the last week.

Anyone noticed Friends or Family who've gone missing?

When I left for London at 0815 on Wednesday (9th May), there was a large police vehicle parked outside the chippy in the Square, but the chippy was not open so I knew something was going down.

I understand they raided The Club and the White Lotus.

What can we expect when you are never more than seven and a half yards, (sorry seven metres) from a drink in the Lower High Street.

I hear they got nothing, I hope an apology is forthcoming if that turns out to be the truth. Any kid on the street will tell you who is dealing, how can the police get it so wrong. Watson?

so its the drinking establishments to blame then not individual people? its nothing to do as such with the pubs down there, so its not a very helpfull comment is it.

I never cease to be amazed at the way some people post on here without making the slightest attempt to establish the facts. A few seconds spent searching Google News for Swanage brings up dozens of press reports about this raid, which was one of a number involving 400 policemen in a number of locations. 20 Were arrested. So far 12 have been charged with conspiring to grow cannabis, all are Vietnamese and live in Southampton and London. Three of those arrested in Southampton and working in a nail bar are reported to be here illegaly as well. The police described it as a family and friends organisation.

Can anon of 12.51 explain how this is related to the proximity of the pubs in the High Street? Why would the police raid nail bars in Southampton and Portsmouth because our pubs happen to be concentrated in the same road? Is this something to do with chaos theory or is it just cosmic rays?

well said 12.36 .

Do you reckon? I'm sorry if I missed the joke. Sounded like someone whingeing about the number of pubs to me.

Sorry, I clicked publish too soon. Meant to add that I get a bit cross at the number of postings made by people who could find the information they are after in less time than it takes them to post a comment here saying they don't know something.

Anonymous said...

Now why get cross? This is an open forum and people can post anonymously, so even sensible people can say silly things without any comeback.
Lack of accountability, that's it!
You would never dream of walking into a pub and spouting your opinions to a load of strangers, would you? Too dangerous.
But isn't that similar to posting on a forum that allows anonymous postings?
So don't get cross!

Has anyone in Swanage been charged? If not, there should be a very clear article stating this in the Advertiser - they mentioned the White lotus in their article (though they got the adress wrong... ) which means that for a lot of people (or at least both the regular readers, myself included) the White Lotus will forever be associated with drug dealing...

It's not that I think the police shouldn't raid if there are suspicions, not at all, but the reporting of raids, including on blogs, needs to be very careful.

Like someone else said, the serious dealers in Swanage could probably be pointed out by anyone who's been in town for a year or more, yet they still wander about! Or so I'm led to believe...

Also, does anyone else find the 'Anonymous' option annoying? I'm starting to think that at least having a username would be better, so that we can see if some recurring opinions are coming from more than one person.

I thought it was more a ring of industrial-scale growers, rather than dealers.

As to the 'anonymous' stuff, I'll look into it. There was a time when it seemed impossible to log on with a user name, which was why I advocated the anon approach (inviting people to include their name in the message).

How about posting something about the Purbeck Arts Week, Paul?

correct me if im wrong was the white lotus raided because of drug/money laudering and illegal employees? if its whiter than white why was it raided and yes many in town could tell you where to obtain drugs perhaps the police do listen at times.

"perhaps the police do listen at times".

Oh, c'mon, Police procedure towards drugs has for some years been to gather information and then 'hit them where it hurts'.
They go for, or as near as possible, for the top and break the supply.
Taking pushers off the streets just annoys the big boys for a very short time.
Mind you, if the Police acted locally then CERTAIN people would feel that the problem was solved when it certainly wouldn't be.
As I'm on a rant.
The bit about haveing user names, um, yeah, but no, but.
Some forums with usernames are very bland, esp. in small communities.
We've had some pretty vitriolic threads on here, and I haven't seen the like on other Swanage blogs.
That isn't necessarily a good thing, but it's better than some form of psuedo censorship.
Also, most username blogs are verified by an email address. I've got 3.
That's 3 different identities I could have. Obviously I could get many more.
I work on 3 different sites each of which have numerous computers. I pass three libraries and two internet cafes regularly.
If people want to abuse a system they'll always find a way.
Roll on July 1st!

Whats happening on July 1st?

Also where are these other blogs which are very bland? URLS would be nice

july the 1st is when there is a smoking ban i cant wait.

Has anybody else noticed the effect the forthcoming ban on smoking in enclosed public places is already having in Swanage?
Tables and chairs are appearing on pavements outside premises and people are sitting there merrily puffing away.
I suffer from Asthma and until recently enjoyed walking down the smoke-free High Street. To keep away from smoke, all I needed to do was keep out of places where smoking is allowed.
Now I also have to take a deep breath and walk out into the road to avoid breathing in other people's smoke.

to above post.

what more do you want?

I came past one restaurant in Station Road which had two tables outside on the pavement, plus 2 "A boards" also on the pavement so that pedestrians had to negociate a chicane and [the many] disabled scooters had no chance without demolishing the lot [perhaps they should have].

great pedestrianise it then he can have 20 tables and everyone can get past OK

Is it just me but does anyone else think we need dedicated motability scooter and shopping trolly lanes.
