I wsh you luck Mike, a lot of luck!
well mike the electorate has spoken! very loudly by the look of it.
Words fail me..........given the diversity of the candidates in all of the parties it is obvious that the electorate of Swanage chose to turn a blind eye to everything bar the colour of the rosettes on show. Perhaps the Conservatives will be able to unify the colour of theirs before the next election? At present there seems to be about three different shades of blue being worn - very pretty but also very confusing!
And thank you to all who voted for me.. Yes, the electorate has spoken: at least the 38% who bothered to turn out to vote.
Mike
does it matter about the 38% mike the libdems were slaughtered last night lost what 242 seats, your policies aint working stand as an independant.
Let's put some spin on this, sorry that's a different spin.
SWANAGE BUCKS NATIONAL TREND.
i.e. no change in number of Liberal councillors; Swanage shows it's Liberal heritage.
PURBECK BUCKS NATIONAL TREND.
i.e. Tory majority reduced.
Perhaps there is hope for we Purbeckians.
C'mon Mike!
I was just a'pondering about Nigel Dragons very welcome victory in Corfe.
A local who meet's the locals needs, and knows them.
A small community that seems to have banded together to improve their voice.
Perhaps Hilary and Mike have begun a change?
I don't think that people voted for them because of their party; I certainly didn't.
I voted for them because they're good people.
proves my point politics should not effect ones ability to represent the locals need, to further prove the point the tories put up a candidate who has only lived and worked here for a few months he got elected soley because he took the tory line again mike stand as an independant nigel did!
you sound remarkably like someone else on another blog who shouts about local electoins and independent councillors and then suddenly brings in natoinal results to prove a point.
and is very good at missing the point of the post.
night,
Have I missed something? What difference does it make to someone's ability to represent the voters if they have only lived here a short time. It is easy enough for them to be briefed about facts.
the point WAS he has only lived here a few months therefore know little about the town and its people, stood as a tory and polled lots of votes, as the old rumour says give a monkey a blue rossette and it would be elected. and 1044 I have always stated that the comunity would be best served, by independants and the point i was making to mike is if he is as most say a good councillor (or libdems/labour are) why not stand as an independant then they could and should get elected on merit not colour! simple enough NIGHT !
I agree its a shame that local politics divide on party lines. I suppose its brand recognition though. We are all conditioned to buy national brands, whether its dog food or politics.
I don't think there is much about the town or its people a councillor can't pick up quickly. We have exactly the same issues as similar places. If there is a difference its the inward looking mentality of some people who think that either the questions or the possible answers are unique to Swanage.
The amusing thing is having demands for "local housing for local people" made by members of parties that nationally favour a free market. A tory demand for socialism in one district perhaps?
Maybe the tories are growing up and moving away from worshipping the market. I did notice that the election address of their leader on pdc complained about too many flats being built here which is odd as he used to say the market should be left to sort things out.
Actually, on reflection, when we had lots of independents on local councils they were almost all tories as you saw when you looked at their decisions and attitudes. They just thought it was a little vulgar and distasteful to use their party label at the parish pump, bless 'em.
yes Please we need more younger candidates that is people who are under 70 people who there were only a few candidates who have younger families for all parties and one candidate who i i think is past her sell buy date especially if you see her at council meeting.
younger and an idependant councillor. now your asking for the holy grail.
What younger people? Thats the problem. If you look at the demographic profile of Purbeck on the census web site you see that there is a huge deficit between about 25 and 50. I am sure that if they showed figures for Swanage alone the situation would be even worse. The projections for the future, which you can see in some of PDC's strategy documents, are that the decline in this age group will worsen so Swanage will become even more of a gerontocracy.
It won't be long before the only under 65s in the place will be second home owners down for a few days.
Well done Mike (better I say it late than never!)
The funny thing is that I know a lot of people in South Swanage, but I don't know anyone who's Tory... am I just lucky? I'll volunteer to canvas next time, though. I'm not a great lover of party politics in local government, but I do like to see people voting, even when I don't agree with them. It's a shame we couldn't measure the percentage voting and their demographic - most young people I know don't bother. They just don't think that they're vote will have any effect on anything. Fools!
