This is by way of an open letter to the management of the Mowlem Theatre and Arts Centre.
The Marine Theatre, a tiny establishment in Lyme Regis, is advertising for a creative director who will be "someone with good experience in programming and marketing events, and able to make a significant contribution to the strategic direction of a venue which has developed hugely in the past two years."
Its part time, salary pro rate of £25k. So why haven't we got such a post here so we would be spared the embarressment of "film to be announced" three times a month and the ghastly tribute bands when there is no film. And before you say "no money" ask why the Marine Theatre has some.

Isn't this really about risk taking?
If you look at the Marine theatres programme then it's full and varied.

They even have a Facebook page. I wonder if the Mowlem board have even heard of Facebook?
The main problem seems to be that the Mowlem's main objective is to cover it's running costs. If you keep them small then you've got an easy job.
If you want to provide your community with a lively and interesting facility then it's a hard job and you have to take risks.
But more than anything else you have to have an active policy of getting the maximum use of the facility which means employing someone who knows how to do that and not leaving it to the worthy trustees. The Marine Theatre recognises that it is over dependent on tribute acts and is actively diversifying according to its latest return to companies house. Contrast that with the Mowlem that has absolutely no polcy aoart from encouraging schools to ussethe place.
