Now Swanage Forum has thrown in the towel and migrated to facebook, would it be a good idea to relaunch this blog as the home of information and debate about our lovely Town?

I don't believe that there's a need for competition.
Why do we have:
http://blog.virtual-swanage.co.uk/
http://swanage.21.forumer.com/
and, of course
http://swangeview.blogspot.com
Oh, and just to be fair:
http://www.swanagetown.blogspot.com/
If I'm honest this blog is so crap you might as well delete it from the list.
Swanage.21 is the migrated virtual Swanage blog, swanagetown.blogspot does not seem to exist and of course swanageview has two urls pointing at it so in reality there are still only the two active, if that is not too strong a word. Swanage.21 is the most anodyne series of comments you can imagine, apart from swipes at the town council which only leaves this one but nobody posts any thing of any consequence here either. I suppose that demonstrates that there are no local issues people want to discuss.
I see that http://www.swanageforum.co.uk/ has a countdown timer on it so I wonder if they are going to relaunch the site with something new in the new year and remove the blog they have added?
The swanagetown blog - I check my links before I post them!
P'raps he's still around?
I agree that swanage21 is a transplant and having lurked there I sort of agree, but word it differently - it no longer interests me. There were occasional posts of what I consider wit and insight and they certainly seemed best informed about SBV.
blog.virtual is it's own - very quiet - thing. It's an off shoot of virtualswanage
As for the countdown?
Who knows - oh, go on, someone does!
As for this one - well, slow, usual suspects - yeah, yeah, I'm one ov um.
Nothing new?
Nothing refreshing?
Bit like Swanage?
Back to my usual, far more stimulating, blogs!
Just found this blogsite.
Is this a proper active blog which can make a difference or just a bunch of nerds talking to each other ? We desperately need something in Swanage because the Advertiser's letters page seems to be reducing and the excellent Gazette is only monthly - desperately needs to be weekly - but right now we're basically voiceless. So someone tell me that we have a thousand or more people involved and perhaps we can start to solve some of Swanage's many problems. Go on, cheer me up.
Streuth!
We need ABSOLUTES!
Dear mazdalover - it's neither.
I agree that the Gazette - well done Nico - is far more topical and interesting than the Advertiser - but I wonder how many of each would be read if they included a coverprice?
The problem is democracy. And the lack of it.
Plus the fact that we Brits have no idea of what democracy actually is.
See the US, France, Germany Switzerland etc.
They have - a usable - democracy - we've always been represented by a minority.
Change the UK before worrying about Swanage.
Sorry, meant to cheer you up - got distracted!
Somebody made the comment:
"I don't believe that there's a need for competition".
The Virtual Swanage forum was lively, with a constant stream of postings on various topics. This forum, Swanage View, has relatively few postings in comparison.
On this forum postings can be made anonymously. On Swanage View they were attributable since posters had to sign in.
Their forum was busy and people who had something to say were prepared to be responsible for what they said.
Not so on this forum, where many topics have ground to a halt due to name-calling and personal attacks.
You wouldn't go into a strange pub where people are wearing masks and make a speech, would you? Imagine the insane comments that people could make... well, that's the equivalent of an anonymous forum such as this one.
That's one reason why I've refrained from making comments here of late.
As for there being "no need for competition"... isn't that the view of despots and tyrants?!
Hi Sentinel
I agree with most of what you say, but virtual and now swanage21 don't interest me because they've become a 'chat room' type of thing.
'Friends' sitting around, chewing the cud and not being offensive.
That's fine for some, but not for me.
Your idea of going into a Swanage - sorry - strange pub where people are wearing masks, is great. I'd do it. And laugh at, and maybe with, the consequences.
My comment about competition should really have read 'unhealthy competition'.
Healthy, honest, competition is good.
The other aint - see banks for confirmation.
Re this blog, mazdalover said above "We desperately need something in Swanage". I agree, which is why I set up "swanageview" in the first place some years ago, because I was frustrated that the only channels of information were the Advertiser and the Gazette.I'm sorry to see the Swanageonline forum go because it clearly served a purpose. I've never made any pretence that this is anything other than a very basic means of providing some form of communication vehicle in the absence of any alternative.Trouble is, it does take some time and hassle, to copy and paste the 'new comments'. I've always resisted ANY censorship, though lack of time means that the more off-the-wall stream of consciousness stuff sometimes goes un-posted (though always left in New Comments). If someone wants to create their own, better, site please feel free to do so!This site only exists while there is nothing better. One day, I'm sure it will quietly fade away, but I'll keep it hanging on for the time being, until there's clearly no need for it. Ideas welcome.

I asked someone whether the bigger threat to civilisation was ignorance or apathy. Their answer was 'I dont know and I dont care' which seems to sum up about 95% of Swanage. You can tell them the truth, you can tell them about all the awful things that are being perpetrated on us by our own Councils and the 'Authorities' but they don't seem to give a damn. Exceptions of course are the brilliant reaction that Gerry Norris got to the Day Centre and Hospital campaigns. And hopefully when it's the 59th minute of the 11th hour, a really strong active protest against the closure of the recycling centre. Even if 250 people join in, thats still 8000 people sitting on their backsides in front of 'Strictly Come Dancing' and allowing their freedom, their democratic rights, and the services for which they have paid, be taken away from them. Remember Nico's quote from Adolf Hitler in The Gazette (September, page 6?) No ? Look it up. It's spine-chilling and its happening here and now.
Gerry Norris would make an excellent Town Councillor. But she's got too much common senses. As indeed has Nico and indeed have I.
Mazdalover (BUT I SIGNED UP ON MONDAY AND I'VE FORGOTTEN MY PASSWORD ALREADY)
Mike I was under the impresion that this was actually your blog.. which begs the question why you post on here anonymously, only too add you name ! Unless it's not you..
Mike Hadley
To the 1:10 Mike, thanks, and I agree.
To Mazdalover - in a perfect world, yeah I agree. What you say about Swanage is actually relevant to the whole country. We are emasculated, it takes a lot to raise us, and then we usually calm down pretty quickly; and go on moaning.
I was looking at some blog/forum stats recently and the World Famous Blah Blah Blog - visited 450,000 times, has 42 members - 20 of whom post regularly.
Look at the new Swanage blog - loads of local info - and thanks for that - but B all postings.
People lurk, very few post.
Yours
NOT M Hadley
re above comment: why you post on here anonymously, only to add you name ! Unless it's not you..
I've found that sometimes I can't post using my own name and id when I'm away from my home computer. And as I would rather use my name than just post anonymously - that's what I do. But I'll try now.
They're back.
