Death Alley

Once again we have a sunny half term day with hundreds of families with their kids playing on the beach. The amusement arcade, the ice cream shop and the toilets are all on the other side of the road along which two way traffic can proceed at 30 miles an hour against a fence of parked cars, vans and suvs. There have already been deaths here. Why o why isn’t the road closed all year around?

As parent and children can learn the GREEN CROSS CODE........for goodness sake, cant people cross a road anymore? It time we stopped pandering!

Its not pandering. Pedestrianisation would make the whole area massively more attractive.

It could work if they actually got rid of the road full stop.

Shore road is on prime land. Its crazy to use it as a road. A road is a utility like a gas pipe, it is not an asset in its own right, its a way of getting somewhere. The sooner this land is integrated into the towns tourism offering the better.

To answer 5.45's post: the green cross code says "don't cross between parked cars", so that means you can't cross anywhere along Shore Road!

7.15 is right - the road should be a public facility. If you're driving you're warm and comfortable and a couple of minutes extra to make everybody else safe and to improve our seafront for pedestrians isn't going to inconvenience anyone.

The road should be closed all year, permanently, and made into a space for fun, markets, events and people!

As a tourist, years ago, one of the things I loved the best was to drive along the front, park (after a long drive) and just watch the sea (main reason for visit). If people don't know how to be careful and cross a road in this day and age they deserve to be run over.
Close the road in peak times, why not? Must be loads of lazy council officials that can close a swing gate once in a week..

Go and watch the sea from De Moulham Road!

Its hard to believe that anyone can seriously make such a crass remark as "If people don't know how to be careful and cross a road in this day and age they deserve to be run over". If its a joke its in especially bad taste after the death of an elderly pedestrian following a collision with a car in the High Street last week. Did he deserve to die? If it was meant seriously, well what can any of us say about anyone capable of such an opinion. Who else "deserves" death or serious injury in their view? It really is one of the most disgusting sentiments I have read for avery long time.

I know a few otherwise perfectly reasonable people whose only argument for keeping the road open is so that they can drive along and enjoy the view. Sorry to shout, but GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AND WALK!!! The view is much better on foot, and surely while driving you should be watching the road!

We have all of this the wrong way around - pedestrians are viewed by so many drivers as second-class citizens, when it should be the other way around. It's time to reclaim our streets from cars, especially where they are of value to tourism and commerce, and remind ourselves that we're all pedestrians when we're not driving!
