Allotments

Allotment rumours.

STC are considering moving the allotments and Swanage Footy Club onto the Grammar school site.

Presumably this so they can sell the current site to raise money - if that's allowed.

The timing also seems a bit strange seeming as how PDC have id'd the site as possible for housing.

But STC only own a bit of the Grammar school site so how could they? I don't care very much if either or both sites are built upon, we need the houses, especially if we can attract rich retirees to buy them. However agricultural land is much cheaper and it only takes a wave of the planning authorities wand to change that status.

I guess that the Postman was in a hurry and forgot this bit.

DCC own most of the Grammar site, it was they who sold the building and a limited amount of the grounds to .... I can't remember their name, but they then sold it on to their own Directors.

What we need is mixed housing developments not ghettos of rich retirees. Agreed about the agricultural land tho'.

A Low Impact Development Policy is what is needed to brighten Swanage up a bit !

What is the point of allotments? Why should public land be used for this purpose? Would it not make more sense to use allotment land for affordable housing?

I know there is an attachment with some older folk but do younger people go in for allotments?

What sort of income does the council get from letting allotments? Does it cover the expense of providing them?

"I know there is an attachment with some older folk but do younger people go in for allotments?"

Is this a poor attempt at humour?

What has the age of allotment users got to do with it? Thats telling us that older people are less important than the young. Why not go up there at the weekend or in the evening and have a look for yourself.

No, I disagree with the last poster who needs to be less defensive.

My point is clear: are allotments being used by younger people? If they are, great, but if not, will allotments go the way of others things.

I was not denigrating older people; I am one myself; with respect, you need to read things more carefully before reacting.

How much land is still owned by DCC ?? I thought they sold it all to the Welfare Dwellings Trust ?? Does DCC still own some of this land ??

Community allotments, extended sports facilities (long overdue) Low Impact Developments, and a community hub (shared facilities)on the LID - no need for every home to have a washing machine, freezer etc, a large meeting room, for residents to share food (sometimes) Good to see there is someone else out there that supports LID.
Solar and PV - and wind (if tested and found to be good). For LIDS it would be important for all key services to be accessed by walk/cycle.

Planning departments say they can think about these things if there is a need. We know there is a need, so what if all the people that want a LID get together and present a case to PDC.

Mmm problem, some existing LID people may not have access to computer(web), or have a postal address, so how will they access details about all of this.

I think STC own about two playing fields of the site...

This is at odds with the pdc consultation document that came round last week asking for views on putting housing on the grammar school site and in various other places but not the allotments. The preferred outcome was 100 houses each at the grammar school and ar Herston split, in each case 50/50 into housing association and private, My suspicion is this will evolve into all private on the grammar school site and all HA at Herston when the suburbanites who live near the former get wind of the proposal.
