Did you know that we will be voting in a national referendum in just a few months’ time?
On 5th May, the country will be holding its first referendum since we voted to continue in the common market in 1975. But what is so important that the nation is having a referendum?
In May we will be voting to change the structure of British politics – an historic moment for democracy in our country.
A public all-party and non-party event will address this on Wednesday 9th February at 7pm in the Mowlem Theatre in Swanage. A panel of speakers from Fair Votes for Dorset, Liberal Democrats, Conservatives, Labour and the Green Party will help us understand the reasons behind the referendum and will explain how the Alternative Vote works. A mock election will be held on the night to show the difference between the present First Past the Post voting system and the proposed Alternative Vote system. There will also be an opportunity to put your questions on the voting systems to the speakers.
Admission to the event is free and it promises to be an interesting and engaging evening.

Who is doing all the posters, advertising in the Gazette/Advertise, stall outside of Co-op and awareness raising, so that every person in Swanage and around is aware that this is going to happyen.
Lets hope there will be a good response.

Why doesn't 4.39PM offer to publicise it if he is such a supporter - lazy and useless maybe?
This IS a key event that will change our democracy for ever. It is not helpful to brush it aside with ridiculous comments about lies and scum. I am not a politician and dont even have a long term bias for or against any particular party. I do believe however that most, but not all politicians are driven by the desire to change and improve society and the country. It is a very difficult job and sometimes things go very wrong for various reasons - misbeliefs, incompetence (common), external events, to name but a few. It is the only democracy we have got however and it is down to all of us to influence, support where we believe right and understand changes like this that are coming along.
Some of the comments also do a dis service to the original poster who appears to be public spirited and trying to help the inhabitants of the town, even when some people dont want to be helped!
Perhaps one day we can have a meeting to hear about making the Mowlem democratic. Ironic to go to a place run by a self perpetuating oligarchy to be told about democracy isn't it.
The Mowlem is not organising the event ...
