Herston Fields

HERSTON FIELD PLOUGHED UP

'I see that herston field has been ploughed up for the first time in years. That'll help the local butterfly population.
It'll be interesting to see what crop is laid or if this was a political act.'

28/4/11 7.03 AM

The Scott Estate 'ordered' the farmer at Coombe Farm to plough up the field. Draw your own conclusions.

I dont think it will be necessary to attend life classes to make a critique on this one.

Don't give up.
I managed to walk my dog round the field this evening.

If you think that they've been naughty then contact Natural England.

Its their field so they can plough it if they want. If there's a public footpath then that must be left but I really don't think you can complain about a landowner ploughing a field.

Dear 10.13

welcome to the Countryside.

Fields have a fair few 'classifications', ferinstance, if a field hasn't had a crop in it for 15 years then you have to get permission from Natural England.

As for footpaths - if you went and had a look you'd see that they stopped by the footpath. they don't have to - but we still have the right to march through any crop they plant.

Oh how we used to laugh when Grandfather came up for Sunday dinner and then would walk it off by walking through the lush wheat that used to be grown there whacking it to pieces with his walking cane!

Oh, happy days!

Whoops, sorry, EDIT

you don't honestly think that the Scotts have ploughed this field because they want to put a crop on it do you? The only thing they want to crop is the cash that will flow from it when they get their own way and build houses on it.

And why shouldn't they build on it if it can help with providing the much needed affordable housing for Swanage. Of course, I don't expect that this would be such a money spinner, sorry, as attractive to Scotts but there ain't that many fields suitable for building on. And it's close to the bus routes. And Herston Halt. Most sustainable. Is the field identified as greenbelt in the local plan?

There used to be houses along the road, it's not inconceivable to imagine more housing in the future.

Yeah let's build on the sand pit field aswell , king georges , the downs. I have always fancied a house on top of Ballard down to be honest.;)

I'd like a Hof house on Ballard Down too David, perhaps we could build a pair ( as per Studland)and they are very affordable, apparently.

Huf Haus actually

Can't wait till they build up there we could get a new doctors surgery then ...yesss

David Furmage said...

Why the need for new doctors place , they can't run the one we got properly at the moment. Like we need a new one!

And you will all get wet feet going into the new doctors' surgery at Herston Fields! A bit of rain this afternoon and I sat and watched the water spread across the recently ploughed part of the field; across the public footpath and onto the remaining bit of grass. Imagine what will happen when there is nowhere for it to go after they build on the flood plain.

Well if they do build on it , let's call it " titanic close" cos hopefully all those luxury flats will sink into the ground :) :)

Anyone know what the men in yellow coats with surveying tools are doing on the fields this morning?

David Furmage said...

Yes , I asked the surveyors what they were up too. The where planning out the area for plans. What plans I asked , to which I got an answer back saying they could not say. The were from a company called Digital Terrain surveys , phone number is 01794 514978. And yep they were there on behalf off Savills.

NHS drop in at Swanage Bay View tomorrow afternoon, 2 - 4, not very well advertised, so spread the word.

Perhaps Savills don't believe that the Environment Agency classify the fields as a floodplain and are double checking? Or maybe they are trying to find a loop-hole to say that the fields aren't in the AONB after all?

OR maybe they are going to excavate the field for a possible Marina! It was navigable up there 100 years ago...
