Leeson House launches as a new Cultural Hub for Dorset
Beloved Leeson House in Purbeck, is set to open its doors to the public again this Summer. Known across Dorset and UK wide, for its educational school trips and activity weekends, things are now changing. One of the few activity centres in the County to stand on its own two feet financially (after its near closure in recent years) new confidence means an exciting range of events to the general public can now be offered out of term. Manager Barry Cullimore explains:
“We had to fight really hard a few years ago to keep everything going, but had tremendous support locally. We first opened our doors in August 2011, by hosting the Red Orb Sculpture Exhibition and had about 1700 visitors in a week, which was so inspiring for a new event. It made us realize we have something unique to offer, as a venue for both visitors to Purbeck and the community.”
To kick start the new program, Lesson House will also host the first 'Purbeck Puppet Festival.' Launching on August 6th this will be a two day extravaganza, consisting of workshops, and interactive theatre with a final performance from award winning Sussex puppet company Theatre Rotto. Families will be able to bring tots to teens, and be encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities, as well as the opportunity to explore the beautiful grounds and stay all day with a picnic lunch or drop in to the pop- up café for tea and refreshments.
Barry says:
“We are tremendously excited about bringing the place alive with art and live theatre. Having the ability to open our doors to the general public and community is going to be a real pleasure, with the hope we can develop plans for more events next year.”
