Fix My Street

REPORT THOSE HAZARDS, BEFORE WINTER HITS

The dark nights are here, and suddenly broken streetlights and uneven pavements change from a minor irritation into a potential danger.

This year, the Fix Before the Freeze campaign encourages you to make a note of street hazards and report them at FixMyStreet.com - now, before they become a winter nightmare.

So, on your way home tonight, look out for streetlights that don't work, or pavements that are just waiting to trip someone up, and be sure to report them.

If you'd like to help spread the word about the Fix Before the Freeze campaign, there is more information there.

Thank you - and watch your step, now!

Does this include the potential dangers of pot holes?

Certainly ... potholes, overhanging trees, overgrown pavements..anything to do with streets.I've used it a few times over the last couple of years, and things do (eventually) seem to get done.

Days road is a nightmare ! Salt bins placed everywhere would be a bonus :)

The winter nightmare will be here in a few weeks......a flood of repairs that have been forming over spring-summer-autumn will hardly all be fixed by then if reported all at once. Report the really serious ones first........the others can wait. After all, you didn't report them before this notice, did you? This campaign may raise unreasonable expectations which can only lead to disappointment. It is not as though the town repair crew are like airline crew, stowing the trollies and readying the plane for a landing in ten minutes......

Just to add to my point immediately above:

I am not criticising the effort. I am just questioning the idea that it should be used all in one fell swoop now. We should report things year round, as we see 'em! Now is too late to get all but a few of them done before Christmas....and a flood of reports all at once could actually slow things down as these are inspected and prioritised.

Would salt not be considered a health and safety issue, if left open to children and others? Also, we are trying to reduce the amount of salt in clearing roads and paths.

If you use grit, like the Germans, you can sweep it up, put it back in the bin and use it again. The Swiss put wood chips down on pavements.

In Holland they use pickle/relish on the back roads. The heat of the sauce ensures snow/ice cannot build back up.

In Belgium they use snow chains on cars , though in Swanage I use fat bikes ;)
