I am getting 4.3 up and 0.5 down, mid afternoon, Friday so my system has not decided to go faster in anticipation of the upgrade. I usually get about 6 so this is worse than usual.

This is the email which prompted my posting:-

Important Service Update : Network upgrade information -
On 16-Jan-12, we’ll be upgrading your local exchange to give you a better broadband service. You should get an improved, more consistent connection, and your speed might improve too.
On the day of your upgrade
• We should be done by 6pm – but it could be later.
• During the upgrade, you’ll lose your broadband and phone connections for up to ten minutes. Unless you’re at home and online when we do the work, you probably won’t notice the downtime. Your broadband and phone should start again automatically.
• You might like to keep a mobile phone handy for urgent or emergency calls.
After your upgrade
We’ll email you when your upgrade’s done. Your broadband and phone should have started again automatically by then. But if they haven’t, restart your BT Home Hub or router by pressing the restart or on/off button.
Your line needs time to settle down
After your upgrade, your broadband might slow down or even stop now and again. That’s normal. It’ll take up to ten days for your broadband to settle down. You can help it along by leaving your BT Home Hub on and using your broadband as much as you can for this time.
Will it affect BT Vision?
• If you have BT Vision and you’re watching an on demand programme during the upgrade, you’ll see an on-screen error message (V04).
• After the upgrade, everything should restart automatically. Any recordings you’ve already saved or scheduled will still be there.
• If you get an error message after the upgrade, restart your BT Vision box by holding down the power button for about six seconds.
If other things connected to your phone or broadband line are playing up after the upgrade, you might need to restart them too.
Is this about BT Infinity?
No, this upgrade is part of our ongoing network improvements. If we can offer you BT Infinity, our super fast fibre broadband service, we’ll let you know in a separate email or letter. Or you can check availability at bt.com/infinity
Got a question?
You can find out more about the upgrade at bt.com/networkupgrade. You can get in touch with us from here too.
Thanks for choosing BT,

I do not understand this. I was brought up on an ink well & quill pen. Getting access to information on the computer seems quick. What difference does a fraction of a second make?

This is part of the 21st Century Network (21CN) programme which is the network transformation project of the UK telecommunications company BT Group plc for data and voice. It had been intended to move BT's telephone network from the present AXE/System X Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to an Internet Protocol (IP) system.

Broadband moves up to ADSL2+ with 24 meg in theory.

Does this apply to TalkTalk customers, too?

As Father Ted put it, "That would be an ecumenical matter."

Wow I'm getting nearly 20Mb download speed now
(NOT!)

My Download speed last week was 6mb/s today, (Tuesday) it's 10.08! Well it's a start.

Upload speeds are what's needed to change. Too much concentration on downloads. Of course, it needs to be improved as they're doing to enable speedier on demand viewing of content, but businesses that rely on fast upload speeds to send large files need to be remembered to.

Great that they're working on this though - be a while before fibre optic, but hey, at least rural broadband may come out of the dark ages.

Oh, and seeview, it should apply to TalkTalk as we use the same exchange, so it'll benefit us as well.

My up load speed has gone from 0.346 mbs last week to 10.664mbs today, which is an improvement, (a rare thing today).

Well, something ahs happened. I was chigging along at about 6mbps both before and after the application of the upgrade on Monday. It is now tuesday evening so I thought I would restart my router and see what happened. What has happened is that my speed has halved which seems a little odd. Perhpas it will sort itself out as BT claim.

Thanks Reece De Ville, I had assumed that, but having received no notification from TT thought I might as well check.

No difference here - roughly 3.5mbps download and between 0.5 and 0.7 upload, depending on which b/band speed check I use.

My ISP is charging £20 to upgrade us to ADSL2+ and says we will get 17mbps. A couple if years ago they said it would be free but that seems to have evaporated. You need SDSL for fast upstream and that is a lot more expensive. Looking at the little maps on the speedtest sites that show what other people get there are a lot of slow TalkTalk connections and one very fast one in Swanage.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if the TalkTalk one in Swanage works for them ?

Reece de Ville said...

i get about 6-8mb download and about 0.5-0.7 upload as a rule. Can vary, but it's better than I had with BT.

I had a TalkTalk bod pop over a while ago to say they were working on the exchange so this may be that. Whoever you're with, you should see a change as BT own the exchange but rent out the lines/points to other companies.

That said, I'll wait and see if mine changes!

Anonymous said...

You may need to ask your isp as the change does not seem to be automatic.

Reece de Ville said...

Maybe a reboot of the router?

Anonymous said...

When I asked my isp they said that because there was a charge you had to ask for the change to be implemented as they did not think the customers would like an unexpected bill of twenty pounds. So, nom not just a reboot of the router.

Dear Mr Nick Storer

We have good news for you. The exchange equipment we use to provide your service has now been upgraded, and we can offer you a faster 'upto 20Mb' service.

You don't need to do anything, and we'll switch you over automatically, for free.

We expect this to happen within the next 5 weeks.

Anyone else having problems with the internet disconnecting and then reconnecting every hour or so? Mines been doing it since BT stuffed up the exchange. Can get around 30-50 mins now without it failing!
