I believe someone is organising some events for the occasion. I am interested in the lasting legacy, and made a proposal to the town council that this would be a good opportunity to make sure Swanage looks its very best, and perhaps set some standrads that could last. Such as get rid of wheelie bins left on pavements, repair roads, remove unsightly banners, remove A-boards blocking pavements, etc. Given the number of journalists coming to the UK (40,000 I've heard) it's perfectly reasonable to expect camera crews to visit towns near to Weymouth (such as Swanage), so we want to be sure that any images shown around the world picture our town at its best.
How about making Swanage an Olympic free town for the duration, banning all reference to it, jamming TV signals etc and inviting the proportion of the world who have no interest in these tedious running, jumping and standing still races to come here to escape.
It won't largely. You don't have to pass by Swanage to get to Weymouth, or go through it, so roads won't get re-done for the olympics and Weymouth isn't exactly next door to Swanage, it's a 45 minute industry.
Unless you drive it won't be an easy commute/to travel to Weymouth, and traffic/parking will be a nightmare.
One thing I have found out being in the tourism industry in Swanage is that a lot of places, caravan parks, hotels, b&bs etc in Weymouth have put prices up for the Olympics so a lot of regulars have been put off and some even turned away.
If they still want to come to Dorset Swanage could utilise this.
But as for the Olympics directly affecting Swanage, it probably won't.

Or just change the channel you bloody massive misery.
No doubt my last words will be, "The horror, the horror" as Britain takes gold in the pogo stick race to go with the tifflywinks bronze and the streets of Swanage echo with cheering.

Start by demolishing Pier Head.
To re-phrase Robin's question in a JFK way, what is Swanage going to do to benefit from the Olympics?

Commercially I think it's a great opportunity for businesses in Swanage.
I have friends in Africa, Canada, Brazil and the USA that all plan to come and stay in the area so they can visit the games in Weymouth.
Knowing the efficiency of Wessex Water, no doubt they will be ripping up the A351 around Corfe just about the time the Olympics arrive.
How will Swanage benefit?
By raising prices and driving its usual visitors away, while those bound for Weymouth will pass by ten miles to the north.
Swanage Olympic Rock, anybody? there will be oodles available after the Olympics.

Olympic Legacy..a sports centre for Swanage would be nice.
Or let sailing boats launch from the beach :)
We could have a beach tug of war between the Conservative Town Council members, and the others.....
