New Subject

If you want to raise a new topic, post your comment here — just click first on Comments below, then type in 'Post a comment' (top right of the next window). Can you choose a title for your post, please? Sometimes it's hard to work out what a comment is about and what the subject is. A new heading will soon be set up, allowing others to see and add their own comments. Not every topic will be posted (there's always the 'Chit-chat' topic for miscellaneous issues/observations), and please use an existing thread if possible. We try to keep posts civilized. And any posts that become too provocative, insulting, threatening or   otherwise unpleasant will be deleted.

SWANAGE RAILWAY CATERING

Are the Swanage Railway Wessex Belle and Birds Nest catering services competing unfairly with the other restaurants in Swanage by using volunteer labour or are the Swanage Railway meal prices set so that they do not compete on price?

DURLSTON BUS SERVICE

Damory coaches will be running their no 5 bus service every half hour from 10:00 to 16:00 on Sunday 27th May 2012 onwards. Where are the timetables and why has there been no advanced publicity?

Yes they are. staffing costs are a major factor in pricing and running a bussines, also the birds nest was recently refurbished, charities seem able to do that. The Con club and legion also have slight advantages.

Hope you don't mind I've lifted the photo of the bay because it's a great shot of our bungalow.

DELAYS IN SERVING FOOD

If you order food at a pub should the staff tell you that there is going to be a delay of over 30 minutes before it is ready? If so should the staff tell you after or before you have paid?

CYCLING IN SHORE ROAD.

How many cyclists did you see today in the section of Shore Road between Victoria Avenue and the Mowlem where all traffic. including bicycles, is banned? What action, if any, should the Police take?

David Furmage said...

So what if cyclists ride along the beach? During the day I totally agree , though I thought this was the wardens job to patrol? At night though when no one is around then I reckon you should be able to cycle it. Do what they do along Bournemouth 10am between 6 pm no cycling. I must say this should also include mobilty cars aswell. One rule for all vechiles:)

I was walking along the road in the part of Shore Road that was closed to traffic. For some reason I was not expecting a cyclist to come up behind and I did not hear him coming. He ran into me at low speed and swore at me for getting in his way. That is why I would like to see the rule enforced. I also saw a young cyclist run over a disabled boy. The boy was knocked to the ground but not badly hurt. He had to be helped to his feet.

The beach wardens do tell cyclists not to cycle but they just dismount and then get back on their bikes a few yards down the road.

If a rule cannot be enforced it should not be made.

Have you had a bad experience somewhere in town?

Generally half an hour is acceptable. If the staff know there will be a wait of more than half an hour I would like to be told.

However as someone who works in the trade I am possibly somewhat more understanding of a delay if I can see the place is busy.

I had to wait for 55 minutes at the Mowlem Restaurant in Swanage before it was taken over by Sea Salt and 70 minutes at the Castle Inn at Corfe Castle. The Mowlem did not warn me about the delay. I had ordered the meal at 13:00 and was due to go to a Swanage Railway meeting at 14:00 and they refused to give me a refund. The owner of Castle Inn took my money and told me there would be a delay afterwards. I had just been for a meeting at the village hall and I just wanted a light meal before going home. A local said he was a good businessman as I would not have ordered the meal if he had told me first. It was several years before I returned to the Mowlem and I have not visited the Castle Inn since. A woman complained recently to Trip Advisor about being kept waiting for 70 minutes at the Greyhound at Corfe Castle. The manageress of the Greyhound wants the woman to visit the Inn again. The pubs in Swanage usually give good service.

I've not eaten in many places locally lately but I did go to the Village Inn just before Christmas and since they had a refurb and new menu this year. Excellent both times and the staff are good too.

Chilled Red is also very good.

Ocean Bay is fine if someone else is picking up the bill but its all a bit over priced if you're paying yourself.

"Are the Swanage Railway Wessex Belle and Birds Nest catering services competing unfairly ... by using volunteer labour" No, catering is one department of the railway that, I believe, depends on paid staff to operate the core service. Volunteers help out on many occasions, but the outlets still have significant staffing costs to cover. Anyway, compare prices and you will see that the railway isn't trying to compete on price. As for refurbishment, yes the Bird's Nest was refurbished; arguably it should have been done a lot sooner. It had to cost-justify the work but in any case, much of the work was essential simply to keep the weather out!
You could argue that other outlets compete "unfairly" because they have a sea view, or have parking nearby... isn't competition a healthy thing anyway?

Odd that nobody has mentioned the unfair cost advantage conferred by ignoring planning permission and building regulations by another establishment. The Swanage Railway is high on the list of reasons for people coming here so any establishments that feel its catering puts them at a disadvantage may well find that overall it increases the number of customers they have since scarcely anyone will eat at the railway every day they are here.

Can you please try to keep this heading for topics that might merit being posted as a 'New subject'? Please bear in mind that not all topics will be posted. It's difficult to judge but selection is made on a balance of likely interest, importance and whether a proposed 'new' topic should really be a comment added to an existing thread. I plan to remove many of the discussions that have been running here, as it makes it confusing to separate new topics from general chat.

POSTING TOPIC

POSTMAN. If people are adding comments to topics why don't you post the topics? No-one has commented about Leeson House which has been posted. People are commenting about Swanage Railway Catering, Delays in serving food and Cycling in Shore Road which have not been posted.

Anonymous said...

Maybe these topics don't fit Postmans agenda so he doesn't make them topics.

The Postman said...

I really don't have an agenda ..except to try to minimise wasted time.. can't see the point of setting up a topic about every little thing that comes up, such as how long it takes to serve food...running this site can get very time-consuming and bogged down in things that may appeal to a very few. I think the answer may be to have broad generic headings and post comments within those: let's try that.

Anonymous said...

You don't have an agenda? Ha, good one!

Anyway, maybe when you see a topic hasn't got a comment and it's been up a few days, like Leeson House, take it down. When something like the discussion in here about good pubs and eateries in town gets a debate and discussion going, create it as a topic.

Also, is there anyway to make it so that the topic with the most recent post goes to the top of the page?

Oh, so what would my agenda be then? I've simply tried to provide a forum where anyone can say pretty much anything. There have only been a few things censored over the years. Some things are not posted because I'm busy and don't get around to it, some because I don't believe they are of interest to enough people, some because they should be posted on existing threads. I admit it's not perfect, but I think many people feel it's better than nothing. The number of comments is not a reason for keeping a topic up; some things are more for information than debate.

Dear Postman/Webmaster;
Some of the items/Articles/Books which are posted, Purbeck Health Care & Arts Week for instance are over a thousand words each, causing one to have to scroll down and down to items below.

Would it not be possible, and more user friendly to post items with say their first three lines and an “Read Whole Item” button, thence to ‘Comment’.

Dub Pistols
Play Live in Swanage
Tickets £13.50

The Swanage 5050 Club and Rockahula Club have come together to give the town of Swanage a group voted the best live act @ “BEST OF BRITISH AWARDS” DJ MAGAZINE

Festival favourites and party-rockers, the Dub Pistols – led by main man Barry Ashworth – are a national treasure. The London-based ska-dub-punk-hoppers have been active for 15 years, causing dancefloor uproar wherever they go, and head into 2012 with their fifth album ‘Worshiping The Dollar’ ready to go.

See video

The evolution of the Dub Pistols has been fascinating to watch since they first bust out in 1996 as fully-formed party animals declaring ‘There’s Gonna Be A Riot’. While their live show continues to whip up unbridled mayhem and build a healthy worldwide following through relentless touring, the records take their own path, moving swiftly on from initial big beat whoopee into celebrations of two lifetimes of musical obsessions, the reggae-punk implications of the Dub Pistols moniker being just the launch-pad.

In the interests of democracy and open debate, could you please post the link to this website which explores some of the issues around the Swanage (free) School.
http://educationinpurbeck.wordpress.com/
It saddens me that Education Swanage have chosen to ban membersfrom their facebook group who raise some very pertinent questions. If parents are to make a vital decision about their child's education, questions should be raised and openly debated.
There are two alternative facebook groups running now. What ever your preference, it's always wise, I feel, to explore both sides of any argument. It seems anyone can join in at Education Swanage - Free Discussion on Facebook. If you're interested, there's some useful information on The Parents For The Purbeck School Facebook group too.
Please let us have an open and frank sharing of opinion and not try to hide issues that will have far reaching consequences for all of our children under the carpet.

Would that be to make it difficult to find? Hidden at the bottom of a long list under the title Swanage School?

Shower along the seafront.

At last there's a shower along the seafront , only problem with it , you got to be under 2ft to use it ! Did we run out of funds half way through putting it up or something?

FUTURE OF PURBECK HEALTHCARE

If you want to impact the NHS proposals:

1 Get to one of the workshops below.

2 Join the Friends of Swanage Hospital. Call Mike Ranger on 01929 422040. This is key - power lies in numbers.

3 Watch out for counter proposals from the Friends of Swanage Hospital.

4 When you attend the workshops, remember, just because the NHS have drawn up two proposals doesn’t mean they are the only options.

If there is something else preferred, we will fight for it. If we just accepted proposals from Dorset County Council or the NHS previously, we wouldn’t have a local recycle centre, a Day Centre, a Nursing home, out of hours medical cover etc etc.
