One can perhaps get an idea of how much the owners of the Advrtiser care about local news when you see how many titles they own!

i said ages ago they were a big company and owned by a american company
You're right! They obviously care a huge amount about local news, otherwise they wouldn't own so many local newspapers.
Local titles have always been seen as a cash cow with lots of revenue from property adverts to be used to subsidise the owner's prestigious but loss making national titles. We can all draw our own conclusions about their interest in journalism from the contents of the Advertiser.
Newsquest is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gannett which publishes USA Today and has headquarters in McLean, Virginia.
It claims its newspapers have the largest total circulation in the USA with 90 daily papers selling 7.3 million copies.
It has about 1,000 other publications and runs 22 tv stations.
Its operating revenue last year was $7.6 billion.
