New waste/recyling site suspended

Work to develop the proposed new Household Waste Site at Victoria Avenue, Swanage has been suspended pending a cabinet decision as whether or not the project should continue. This is part of an overall spending review at Dorset County Council and no decisions have apparently yet been made. Watch this space.

'At the moment ..... good news'

Ha Ha...
No it's not good news,I have spoken to Mr Burdis, who says its fair to say that DCC are unsure of whether the new recycling centre will happen. The planning permission to use the present recycling (tip) has been extended until December 2011, but this was only achieved because the new one should have been in place by this time. It cannot be confirmed that this will be extended further. DCC have been told that they need to cut their spending by 40 million, because of this DCC may decide not to go ahead with the centre for Swanage.

If Swanage and its villages want a recycling centre, again we will need to campaign hard for this, with STC PDC. Here we go again !!!!!

We could easily end up with no recyling centre in Swanage. How would people get mattresses, wardrobes and other large items on the bus, train or in a car to Wareham ??

The DCC suggested way to overcome this is to hire a removal lorry, or pay DCC to pick it up !!

Or could we just get on and 'do it ourselves'?!

I cant understand why everyone seems so "gobsmacked" that they are going to loose services. For heavens sake this country is in a mess, and we need to cut costs, so we all need to take the brunt.

no recycling centre will mean major fly tipping. I for one both cannot afford and am not willing to move my waste to wareham. unless I'm allowed to leave it on north st of course

Fly tip in the car park of the Town Hall (past the electronic vanity gates). I am sure they will sort it out.

If there is no 'bottle bank' etc. for recycled waste then leave it in the lobby of your local BANK.

They caused the cut backs by dumping all our money in offshore tax havens. How can you 'loose money' they haven't shredded or burned it to be sure.

Yes, I agree, that we may need to make cuts, but how do you suggest Swanage copes with its recycling etc. Perhaps the above person would like to help set up an independent business in Freecycle or something that would create employment in this town. Perhaps we could set up our own renewable energy plant for Swanage from this waste. If we don't do something and the present tip closes - then there is sure to be fly tipping - what happens to garden waste, cardboard, plastic, old furniture, mattresses etc.

This is going to be interesting.
