Reverse the rat race?

why can't they make Church lane one way in the other direction,(upwards) so that you can access Durlston etc without going round town. I expect people will think this annoying because you can rat run all the way down from the top of Queens road to Co-op if you fancy. Shame- you could still get to town quick enough, down Townsend rd, along High Street and into Court Hill.

The Police used to do it on New Years Eve (because the High street was closed up to the Town Hall). The time I sit waiting in and around Station Road is crazy! I can't believe the pedestrians enjoy the car exhaust fumes either. Things should get a little radical here. Lets see a relief road to Durlston with the objective of "access only" to all of Shore Road, Station and Institute Roads, and the Lower High Street.

I would like to suggest something slightly more radical.

The visually most attractive way into town, particularly in the evening, is down the High Street. If the direction of traffic in the one way section was reversed it could be signposted as a tourist route for cars only(with those brown signs that usually point to ruins etc). Traffic for Durlston could go this way and turn up to go via Queens Road. Returning it could cross the High Street and go down Church Hill.

This would give tourists a more scenic route, missing the delights of Victoria Avenue industrial estate etc. and also reduce congestion in the town centre. Clearly it is not a practicable route for large vehicles as there would be a sharp U turn into Kings Road East to get to the rest of the town centre but it would work for cars.
