I stopped using the Swanage Forum ever since JustaLocal started posting his offensive drivel. Who did he think he was trying to kid with his derogatory and vile remarks aimed at other users.
My husband and myself now use the other Swanage forum.

do you have a link for this other swanage forum

Its a pity its gone, but its a bit much if you expect someone to run a forum for discussion of local topics only to have it largely confined to matters like what to have for breakfast.misrsm

It's a real shame that the Swanage forum had to close as I for one used it a lot, I also understand the work load that was put in by the webmaster and his team to bring a service like that to everyone.
There were some nice people on there as well as some nice banter.
Sometimes things went a little off topic, but that's the nature of a forum. People like to chit chat and gossip, which is fun.

I think the above poster is talking about my forum, it was called the Swanage forum, but has since expanded to cover the whole of Dorset, hense the name

www.dorsetforum.co.uk

Although I maybe wrong ?

Perhaps Just a local tried to get lively debates going, but as a few have said it became a forum where discussions revolved around custard and inane stuff like that, one or two posters even went as far as to say the current economic climate did not concern Swanage and its forum. The Webmaster wanted the debates opened up, especially in the sub forums covering national events and news stories. Unfortunatly one poster in particular made light of serious subjects and just posted to boost their personal post numbers. If Anon 318 found it offensive they had various options, those being to report he/she to the Webmaster, no reports received?, reply and say I find you offensive plz stop, refute their allegations or ignore. Don't run away and whinge. If as I suspect you are refering to a bloke called Hadley, that person misinformed the forum of subjects, was told he was wrong, still insisted he was right then when proved wrong failed to apologise. I know both parties, Just a Local might be blunt but offensive nahhh.
If you read this forum it dies for days or even weeks on end. Why? Because no one gets it going, the school debate was good. Then again perhaps Swanage gets what it deserves on forums, boring, inane drivel! This world we live in is falling apart and beleive it or not people it does concern Swanage.

Anyway I had toast for breakfast but no marmite what did you guys have?

¨Just a Local might be blunt but offensive nahhh¨.

I´m delighted to see that, as with jal, you know what people find offensive!

I think it´s a shame that the forum has gone. I didn´t post but found it nice just to lurk.

It´s a shame that both times it closed it has been because of the behaviour of it´s members - but hey ho, that´s life.

I wish the Dorset Forum all the best.

A couple of forums that I´m active on all posts are verified by the webmaster before being made public. It can be very frustrating, and as someone who doesn´t really agree with censorship a bit annoying. But it does mean that very serious topics are discussed in a non-aggressive manner.

The theory is that no post will be refused, but rumour and speculation must be qualified.

I don´t think that that is relevant for this forum, we just have to accept that at times anon will post something that will offend others.

Anonymous said...

I agree that some might find things ofensive that others dont. That subject is certainly in the news recently. But if everything posted was up to scruntiny nothing would ever be posted, because someone somewhere would find something offensive or unsuitable. I find jokes about Gary Glitter offensive others dont, I read a joke about Jade Goody it made me smile others would ban it. So you have two options, one being as you say having a moderator to vet post (that then being censorship and allowing one person to decide what is accepatble and what is not) or just an open forum or blog allowing all views to be posted. Ano 3.18 found Jal posts offensive so according to her he would not be allowed to post, so she now is setting herself up as a censor ergo free speech is gone. So who is right and who's wrong? Freedom of speech is being eroded, lets not have the net go the same way.

I think that the "Dorset Forum Webmaster" was one of the people who was getting into a heated discussion with another forum user yesterday, shortly before it was removed. Perhaps he/she had planned to get the forum taken down so they could promote their own forum?

Oh I do just so hate quoting myself!

Dear 7:14, What´s your point?

Oh, by the way, I´ve just had a look at the Dorset forum and it´s now got some of the Swanage Forum threads, but one amused me greatly.

Someone was bemoaning the closure of the card shop under the Mowlem and how difficult it would be to buy cards in Swanage - WHAAAAAT?

The Mulberry, a locally owned business sells some great cards, the person who had the card shop has taken over what used to be Ocean Bargain Buys, a card shop has just opened in the Mowlem, and Quarr Gallery a locally run ´not for profit´ business promotes local artists and has a fantastic range of cards - all of which means that it generates money for locals, by locals and does it locally.

PS

I have no financial connection to any Gallery in Swanage.

Or anywhere else.

Anonymous said...

Anon 733 if you read the time stamp on those post they were put up over a month ago, so perhaps the new card shops were not common knowledge or open. I did not know the mulbery tree gallery sold cards thanks for telling us Im sure emma and sonia will be gratefull for the plug. All I was saying is that some people will find things offensive then ban then others wont so anon 318 (halibert??) might want JAL barred others might not who is right? who decides JAL right to free expression you? A point about the forums you use if I went on there an posted " I have heard that tom dick & harry have been arrested" would that be banned or would it be allowd to be posted?

Damn, I´ll have to quote myself again!

¨The theory is that no post will be refused, but rumour and speculation must be qualified¨.

Your Tom Dick and Harry post would be allowed - if it was valid.

And please bear in mind that I also said that; I don´t really agree with censorship. But it does mean that very serious topics are discussed in a non-aggressive manner.

Paraphrasing myself.

"ban then others wont so anon 318 (halibert??) might want JAL barred "
anon 318 is not HALIBERT. I am and I speak for myself. I don't want anyone banned. I can ignore or reply

Does anyone find it ironic that the most popular topic on here apart from the schools one is about the competition closing down .

At least its lively

A round of applause everyone for Mike Hardly for again posting on his own blog as an Anonymous user.

How many post do you do like that Mike ? Two sides of a story ?

Anonymous said...

Just a Local not offensive, let's see.

JaL posts about having the pleasure of watching FITNA.

Lockerby says "FITNA?????"

JaL's response - For F#cks Sake google it...

Case closed!

Although there are more.

Jal then says "What irritates me is the fact that lots on here only want to talk about innane subjects" fair enough it is a forum, the idea being people can talk about what they want.

Later Jal says "in fairness along with the c££p" - So everyone elses post is crap, just a little egotistical.

JaL says "it seems acceptable to post non local news stories and local inane stuff when I post stuff it gets chewed" So now the truth comes out, it's not about everyone elses posts, it's about the lack of interest in his own.

Then Jal talks about another "avid" poster - "One final point a avid poster put up a site about speeding tickets, I found it fine but an eledrly aunt was here (should not be driving) she insisted i tried her number I said nah dont bother etc etc but she insisted so I did knowing the upcomming result she took ages to calm down because she thought she had broken the law or someone had used her car in cornwall, at that time did I want to gointo a certain shop in town and have a go at a carpart saleman YES I did but I knew it was light hearted my aunty did not." - So although he knew it was a joke post, he then says his own Aunt whom shouldn't be driving (?) was upset by it, and he then makes a direct point of saying he was going to go into town and "have a go" at Paulinho who I think was a Mod & Administrator on the Swanage forum. But he contradics himself by saying he knew it was a joke, yet felt the need to "have a go" at the poster. Isn't posting a threat to someone a little off & offensive.

So in 5 pots on 1 page of the old forum, JustaLocal offends an Admin, Lockerby & the other general forum users? Nice guy!

I have sat back and listened to all the stuff being written on here about JAL thats me, when I said ive had the pleasure it was meant in the same vain as someone saying sarcastiaclly I have had the pleasure of seeing the taxman bank manager etc a tad tongue in cheek, as for saying FFS google it why not? lockeby then said ohh I knew about the film the german mp ummm no anyway move on. The sppeding ticket site I explained, As a familly we were looking at this site members who were the right side of 75 new it was a joke but "aunty" did not she insisted we put her number in resulting in upset despite explaining joke fun laugh etc, and yes whilst she was upset i would have given paul a piece of my mind just like happens to people when other park across your drive way you dont want to crucify them but your annoyed and want to have a strong word thats all I said, the great paul took umbridge hey ho thats life. And before you you go on cannonising paul Im relyably imformed that on his facebook account he was saying that he was given credit for taking the forum down, perhaps to get people to use his own forum, also I was told that one reason the site closed was due to the stupid subjects being discussed, the webmaster wanted a forum that discussed wide ranging things concerning swanage and further afield, he did not get that so perhaps thats why he pulled the plug, perhaps he also got fed up with copywrite stuff being posted a subject he had warned certain posters about, perhaps the webM thought this was being done on purpose? perhaps he thought the arguements/discussions between me and a few others were satged (not by me), again perhaps to promote the othersite? You dont know me so dont comment if Im a nice guy or not, you dont know if I had been tasked to liven up the debates do you? but you still feel qualified to make a comment about the subject did you post in the swanage forum?? or just felt qualified to have an opinion?

One final point on sunday I was having a beer and was chatting about the above, some one chirps up I know paul thomson went to school with him whats he like I said "arogant" came the reply no they said perhaps just "aloof"

The above statements are my opinions and are in no way connect with the swanageforum or its owners or webmaster.

Anonymous said...

I see your trying to add fuel to the fire again JaL. I'm on Paul's Facebook Swanage Group and there's no such comments. I would suggest you check your facts (again) before you open your mouth, as yet again it's spewing disinformation.

Plus it's funny you seem to think you have the grace of god to publish someones personal details on a public blog, which is in my undertstanding a breach of there terms and conditions.

I also find you last comments very funny as I went to school with you JaL (when you went) and the storys I could tell about you, but won't.

One other thing, I think your talk of it all being a plan to bring down the Swanage forum are unfounded. If you look into it you may find out who actually owns the Dorset Forum, and the ownership isn't anything to do with Paul.

As the designer and webmaster of the Swanage forum, I thought it was about time that I put the record straight to why I pulled the site before any more rumors appear like the one about the council forcing me to pull the site to make way for their new (overdue) one, other former users taking credit for having it removed and other stories made up by the Swanage rumor mill.

The last forum was the 3rd attempt I had to setup and run a community forum for discussing local issues. The first forum had to go due to technical and security issues and the second one due to misuse by a selection of members who abused it, ranging from posting copyrighted materials to sending crude messages of a sexual nature to other users which were against the terms of use. When the forum got to the stage that I had to spent a hour or more every day to remove offensive posts and was receiving daily complaints about members posts and personal messages, I felt that the forum was not worth continuing with and it was removed.

The last version which took me over 120 hours to write from scratch, launched in November last year got off to a good start but the same previous problem members soon reappeared and the same issues started again. After the long argument between members at the weekend and the repeated submission of a lot of copyrighted material again which took several hours to find and remove and yet more complaints about topics and posts, I felt that it was not worth trying to provide a free service to the town as it would only continue to be abused by a childish section of the community.

I did hope that the people who abused the previous forum would have grown up and acted more responsibly but was proved wrong yet again. I always tried to avoid removing a post unless it was very offensive or contained illegal material, a policy which did cause a lot of complaints when people didn't agree with a post and demanded that it be removed but in the interests of free speech, I tried to be as impartial as possible but as this 20+ reply topic shows, this failed badly.
In future I will spent my spare time working on my other projects which benefit the local community and someone else can have the pleasure of running a forum.

Perhaps this topic about the closure of my site can now be finished, and more important things be discussed on http://swanageview.blogspot.com/ or on http://www.dorsetforum.co.uk/

I would also like to add to the above post.

It is a shame that the Swanage Forum has closed, but I also know the work that went into running it.

As posted above there was a lot more going on behind the scenes oher than mine and JaL's heated chats, which I must say I liked JaL, sadly that will know be missed for all to read.

Plus JaL the person who went to school with me that said I was "aloof" and not "arrogant" were spot on :-) and I have no problem with that.
I think the sooner people understand who they are the better they can get on with there lifes, and at the moment my life couldn't be better, and I'm not saying that in a patronising way o.k.

annonomouse said...

I for one thought the site was good. It did suffer from the usual read but don't comment type of people, who now all seem so very vocal on here, but are actually to shy to post with their proper names but can still run other people down.
Does it matter that the people who actually posted anything had fun, no one else seemed to want to join in or post anything?

Re the Above an internet chatter told me that just rtepeating what they said!
Plus it's funny you seem to think you have the grace of god to publish someones personal details on a public blog, which is in my undertstanding a breach of there terms and conditions.
publish personal details??? ie home adress phone number? NI number income bank details?? no dont think so, just a comment of what someones opinion of him was paul makes it common knowledge of whom he is so dont hang that one on me plz.

I also find you last comments very funny as I went to school with you JaL (when you went) and the storys I could tell about you, but won't.

wait Ahh I have just reread my school attendance record well over 90% attendance when I went ehhh dont push me plz and I beleive threating to disclose information that could be described as deflamatory could be contrude as balackmail.

One other thing, I think your talk of it all being a plan to bring down the Swanage forum are unfounded. If you look into it you may find out who actually owns the Dorset Forum, and the ownership isn't anything to do with Paul.
Again part opinion part info received, plus part conspiracy theory read into that what you want.

Read the webmaster post and you can see why the forum went down ask paul? even he admitted he was aloof etc lol. I wonder what you got up to at school???

Anyway I have now many links to blogs and forums I shall be trolling those. bet ya love me really. lmao

One thought I dont think anyone on pauls sites went to school with me might have been around but not with me? And are you the gal Im thinking of if you are wow what great times we all had the mowlem theatre good memories shame old age is catching up with us.

I have to say that as a fairly regular contributor to the old forum (mainly of the inane variety) I ind it's apparently final passing a shame.

It was a good craic and allowed non-local Swanage devotees a chance to feel a bit local.

Thanks to the webmaster - I didn't appreciate how much work it took and to all the posters.

Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers said: "The prohibition on receiving evidence obtained by torture is not primarily because such evidence is unreliable or because the reception of the evidence will make the trial unfair. Rather it is because 'the state must stand firm against the conduct that has produced the evidence'.

"That principle applies to the state in which an attempt is made to adduce such evidence. It does not require this state, the United Kingdom, to retain in this country, to the detriment of national security, a terrorist suspect. What is relevant is the degree of risk that Mr Othman [Abu Qatada] will suffer a flagrant denial of justice if he is deported to Jordan."

Any chance of a serious discussion before jal returns?
