Recycling Centre?

I heard yesteday (Monday 29th) that people are no longer allowed to take anything away from the dump (either for free or for token payment). Before getting agitated, I have tried to find out the facts from Purbeck District Council but the person I need to speak to is apparently away today. I shall do all I can to stop this, if it does turn out to be their latest policy.

Of course, we have been here before, when it was operated by W&S (now it's SITA), and PDC pretty quickly reinstated the practice. But it seems a no-brainer that by definition a recycling centre should allow, even encourage, recycling in its purest form: allowing people to use something that others no longer have a use for.

Please post here any of your own experiences about this.

They stopped you taking stuff away ages ago.
Mind you, I am a skip 'junkie' and would probably take the entire contents of one away if the wife would let me..
But in the past, I have managed to acquire many Dyson hoover parts that have kept my one going.

What would be good is a recycle centre, be it for wood, furniture, pain etc. Do you think there is a need in Swanage?? Skips are full of wood, often this just goes to landfill. Furniture the same. If it was sorted and displayed undercover (somewhere)??
What does everyone think.

Sorry! I left off the pain (t)!!
Don't think recycling pain would be very attractive!!

Re "They stopped you taking stuff away ages ago.".... They did try, but we all kicked up and got it reinstated pretty quick. And you've been able to take things away ever since... until yesterday..

Well, I don't know what's going on here. Dorset County Council run the service (subcontracted to SITA). Neil Randall of PDC tells me he has spoken with DCC. They told him there is NO CHANGE; that people can still take things away, either for a fee or for nothing, at a price negotiated by the staff on site. I have myself spoken with DCC, who are investigating further. They will speak to the operator and let me know. Mike

OK. Have just heard from Waste Management at Dorset County Council. They have spoken to the contractor (SITA) who say there has been no instruction issued to stop the recycling of items from the Panorama Road site (whether for free or for token payment. The contractor is going to contact the site operatives to clarify the position. If anyone has an experience of anything different , please let me know: post here and contact me via email on mail(at)mikehadley.net

Might there be a connection in the fact that the operators of the site also own Cottees auction house in Wareham? Those of us sad enough to use both facilities are overwhelmed by feelings of deja vu when visiting the latter establishment and being confronted by the cast-offs we had noticed put to one side at the recycling centre.

It would not surpise me at at...

On my last visit (to a different dump, but i am sure they are all the same)I found a beautiful steel vice, very old fashioned in the fact that it had a small anvil on the end of it, just what I needed for my particular hobby. I asked if I could have it, offered a good price for it.... no, nothing, no light behind the vacant staring eyes... watched him throw it in a big deep metal only skip..
