Special needs?
ALLSORTS is a Purbeck-wide information and social/support group for parents and carers of children with special needs. The group was set up some years ago to help parents and carers of children with special needs. The people behind setting it up no longer seem to require the support it provided, but is there anyone out there who would be interesting in taking on running the group? One easy aspect is simply running this blog to keep people informed:
http://www.allsortsspecialneeds.co.uk
If so, let me know and I can give you editing authority to run the blog and advice on anything else you might to do in terms of linking with various specialist bodies.

Swanage Residents Association?
Some of you will recall there was an advertised public appeal in 2011 to keep the Swanage Residents Association going. I actually thought it had already been wound down, but it seems there are still some formalities to complete. I thought it worth making one last effort to see if anyone is interested in keeping this going (in whatever way a new committee determines). If no community-minded people step forward to fill the key roles (Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, etc) and form a legitimate committee, the organisation WILL finally be formally wound down.
If you wish to join the Committee or stand for election as an Officer, please let me know asap, as the SRA is scheduled to be dissolved at a committee meeting on 15 December 2014. Mike Hadley (Committee Member): mailformh@gmail.com

Dolphin Alert service
[From Durlston Country Park newsletter]
Dolphin Alert! Text Service
What with all these new fangled technologies
(mobile phones!) now allowing almost instant
communications we have decided to drag
ourselves kicking and screaming into the
1990’s and offer a text alert system to anyone
that’s interested in spotting the magnificent
creatures of the sea. By making the call out
system more accessible we hope to
encourage more people to text in their own
sightings to give us a better idea of
populations and behaviour in the waters off
Dorset. Although called Dolphin Alert! it is not
just Dolphin sightings we’re interested in, we
would love to hear about sightings of Whales,
Sharks, Seals or anything a little unusual such
as Sunfish. All you need to do to receive a
text notification of what has been spotted,
where and when, is to email your name and
telephone number (texts can be sent to a
landline if you don’t have a mobile, or one
that you switch on!) to info@durlston.co.uk
with the subject ‘Dolphin Alert’. The service
costs £5 per year (cheques payable to
Durlston Marine Project) (1st August – 31st
July).

Shark in Swanage!?
I was by the stone quay this morning when the kids crabbing suddenly shouted out, and there was a four-to-five feet long shark swimming around. I'm told this was probably a tope (as too big for a dogfish), but if anyone else who was there knows better ...

Unesco director voices concerns over £3billion Navitus Bay wind farm project
9:00am Saturday 24th May 2014 in NewsBy Jim Durkin
THE director of Unesco’s World Heritage Centre has voiced concerns about the controversial £3billion Navitus Bay wind farm project.
Kishore Rao, who is an instrumental figure in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, has written to the head of heritage policy at the UK Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The Jurassic Coast, where the wind farm is proposed to be constructed offshore, became a Unesco World Heritage site in 2001.
Unesco’s concerns on the project come after the respected advisory body – the International Union for Conservation & Nature (IUCN) – reviewed relevant documentation connected to the wind farm application.
In his letter to Leila Al-Kazwini, Mr Rao said potential impacts from the wind farm proposals – to put up to 194 turbines with a maximum tip height of 200m – could be, according to the IUCN report, in contradiction to the “overarching principle of the World Heritage Convention as stipulated in its Article 4.”
Article 4 of the World Heritage Convention, which the UK is signed up to, spells out that individual countries have a duty to ensure the “identification, protection, conservation, presentation and transmission to future generations of the cultural and natural heritage” of World Heritage Sites within their borders.
Mr Rao does not elaborate on what would happen with regard to the Jurassic Coast’s current World Heritage Status, should the Navitus Bay application become a reality as it is.
But he did stress that the IUCN report concluded: “The completion of the project would result in the property being presented and transmitted to future generations in a form that is significantly different from what was there at the time of inscription and until today.
“Specifically, the property will change from being located in a natural setting that is largely free from human-made structures to one where its setting is dominated by human-made structures.”
The IUCN also said the wind farm will have a “significant impact on important views.”
Earlier this month the Planning Inspectorate confirmed the wind farm application, from French energy giant EDF and Dutch firm Eneco, had been accepted. The inspectorate now has three months to examine the proposals.
Plans for the sprawling wind farm have been subject to numerous public exhibitions, which have divided local opinion.
On this latest twist in the Navtus Bay saga, Dr Andrew Langley, from wind farm opposition group Challenge Navitus, said: “We welcome IUCN’s conclusions, which are in line with our own concerns. “The Navitus Bay wind farm would completely change the character of views from the main visitor centre at Durlston Castle.
“The decision by the Crown Estate in 2009 to designate this zone so close to England’s only natural World Heritage Site, two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a national park, was extremely surprising.”
Work of organisation
THE United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) was established in 1945, shortly after the end of the Second World War.
It was formed to create lasting peace on the basis of “humanity’s moral and intellectual solidarity.”
It works to build networks among nations through a range of initiatives, including creating protection and support for cultural diversity.
Unesco created the idea of World Heritage to protect sites of outstanding universal value

Art events now on
http://www.dorsetaonb.org.uk/our-work/drawing-inspiration
Over the centuries, the Dorset landscape has inspired artists, writers and scientists to produce outstanding work.
The Drawing Inspiration project takes a closer look at landscape-inspired art to encourage people to look at the landscape from a new perspective. These are fantastic works of art but they also tell us about the cultural, physical and social changes that have shaped how we live today.
Working with partners across Dorset, the project will showcase these great art works from the past. Project Coordinator Crystal Johnson explains, "We have a fantastic range of different events, there is something for everyone. Take a walk, visit an exhibition, join a workshop, listen to a talk – immerse yourself in the beauty of the Dorset landscape and experiencing first-hand the places where artists have truly, drawn inspiration."
Find events near you on the map below or click on the links on the right for further information. You can also pick up a programme at your local Tourist Information Centre.

Public transport
Better local public transport needed.
A regular, punctual, circular bus service would be a great asset for Swanage promoting tourism, cutting the number of car journeys and of great help to the elderly and infirm. I would suggest from the Railway Station, to the Pier, Durlston Country Park, Hospital, Arkwrights, Hereston via the Caravan site, the Middle School, Ship at Langton, Square and Compass, Kingston, Harman’s Cross, back down Victoria Avenue, St Georges Car Park, Northbrook Road, Village Inn, New Swanage, North Beach Car Park, Seafront and home. I would say running two, hourly services, one in each direction would ensure people don’t need to wait more than half an hour for a bus. I would hope to pay £1 for a single trip and £2 for an all day rover ticket. No bus passes. Bus drivers should be instructed, if for unforeseen circumstances, they are late at a stop no fare is chargeable; and that they should not leave a stop until the timetable stipulates. Hopefully the buses could be electric, and obviously accessible.
Fund it locally
1) With all the money from development tax, instead of stupid cycleways which only a tiny fraction of residents use.
2) With the revenues from all this recycled stuff they make us save.

Leon Hunt's n-Tet, Studland, Sunday 30th March.
Renowned 5-string banjo player Leon Hunt has played alongside some of the world's top musicians. After more than twenty-five years of playing almost every style of music, except the one usually associated with the banjo, it was time to get back to playing some good old-fashioned bluegrass.
Hunt and long-time musical collaborator Jason Titley had been discussing the possibility of putting a bluegrass band together for a while, but it was the death of the original architect of the bluegrass banjo style, Earl Scruggs in 2012 that provided them with the impetus to get the ball rolling. Bass player and vocalist Ben Somers and mandolinist Joe Hymas joined superb bluegrass guitarist Jason Titley, and Leon Hunt on banjo to form The Leon Hunt n-Tet.
This spring the band return to Dorset with ARTSREACH, following their memorable performance at last year’s Purbeck Folk Festival, to play homage to Scruggs with tracks from their debut album 'Farewell Blues’. Expect an evening of superb musicianship from this traditional bluegrass band.

Tom Langham's Hot Fingers - Sunday 2nd February at 7.30 - Studland Village Hall
Tom Langham's Hot Fingers - Sunday 2nd February at 7.30 - Studland Village Hall
Back by huge popular demand, Hot Fingers welcome you to an eclectic mix of vintage acoustic string music. On this journey they visit the hot jazz of 1920's New York and sophisticated 1930's Swing, including references to the king of gypsy swing, Django Reinhardt. This is mixed with vocals of song-writing greats such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, as well as novelty features from the likes of Cliff 'Ukulele Ike' Edwards.
Tom 'Spats' Langham has crooned his way around the world with bands such as the 'Pasadena Roof Orchestra' and has several times sold out venues on the Artsreach circuit.
Although just a trio, the band can be seen removing three guitars, a double bass, a sousaphone, a banjo, a mandolin, two ukuleles, a clarinet, a tuba, and a pair of castanets from the band van. Expect an evening of fabulous entertainment!
