Studland concert Sun 4th May

Our next concert is on Sunday 4th May, featuring the return of Paul Hutchinson - this time as one half of Belshazzar’s Feast. This duo have asked to start their 20th Anniversary tour here following Paul Hutchinson’s visit to the hall in November 2013.The much loved odd couple of Paul Sartin and Paul Hutchinson unique among the line ups of the vibrant English Folk scene, renowned as consummate live performers who mix humour and intricate traditional English Folk music in equal measures. Over the centuries, the Dorset landscape has inspired artists, writers and scientists to produce outstanding work.

The Drawing Inspiration project takes a closer look at landscape-inspired art to encourage people to look at the landscape from a new perspective. These are fantastic works of art but they also tell us about the cultural, physical and social changes that have shaped how we live today.

Working with partners across Dorset, the project will showcase these great art works from the past. Project Coordinator Crystal Johnson explains, "We have a fantastic range of different events, there is something for everyone. Take a walk, visit an exhibition, join a workshop, listen to a talk – immerse yourself in the beauty of the Dorset landscape and experiencing first-hand the places where artists have truly, drawn inspiration."

Public transport

Better local public transport needed.

A regular, punctual, circular bus service would be a great asset for Swanage promoting tourism, cutting the number of car journeys and of great help to the elderly and infirm. I would suggest from the Railway Station, to the Pier, Durlston Country Park, Hospital, Arkwrights, Hereston via the Caravan site, the Middle School, Ship at Langton, Square and Compass, Kingston, Harman’s Cross, back down Victoria Avenue, St Georges Car Park, Northbrook Road, Village Inn, New Swanage, North Beach Car Park, Seafront and home. I would say running two, hourly services, one in each direction would ensure people don’t need to wait more than half an hour for a bus. I would hope to pay £1 for a single trip and £2 for an all day rover ticket. No bus passes. Bus drivers should be instructed, if for unforeseen circumstances, they are late at a stop no fare is chargeable; and that they should not leave a stop until the timetable stipulates. Hopefully the buses could be electric, and obviously accessible.
Fund it locally
1) With all the money from development tax, instead of stupid cycleways which only a tiny fraction of residents use. 
2) With the revenues from all this recycled stuff they make us save.

Whats happening on the lower Downs? Normally if you want to blow your nose or prune a rose bush you need planning permission. What's happening to all the top soil? Leon Hunt's n-Tet, Studland, Sunday 30th March.

Renowned 5-string banjo player Leon Hunt has played alongside some of the world's top musicians. After more than twenty-five years of playing almost every style of music, except the one usually associated with the banjo, it was time to get back to playing some good old-fashioned bluegrass.

Hunt and long-time musical collaborator Jason Titley had been discussing the possibility of putting a bluegrass band together for a while, but it was the death of the original architect of the bluegrass banjo style, Earl Scruggs in 2012 that provided them with the impetus to get the ball rolling. Bass player and vocalist Ben Somers and mandolinist Joe Hymas joined superb bluegrass guitarist Jason Titley, and Leon Hunt on banjo to form The Leon Hunt n-Tet.
This spring the band return to Dorset with ARTSREACH, following their memorable performance at last year’s Purbeck Folk Festival, to play homage to Scruggs with tracks from their debut album 'Farewell Blues’. Expect an evening of superb musicianship from this traditional bluegrass band.

Tom Langham's Hot Fingers - Sunday 2nd February at 7.30 - Studland Village Hall

 

Back by huge popular demand, Hot Fingers welcome you to an eclectic mix of vintage acoustic string music. On this journey they visit the hot jazz of 1920's New York and sophisticated 1930's Swing, including references to the king of gypsy swing, Django Reinhardt. This is mixed with vocals of song-writing greats such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, as well as novelty features from the likes of Cliff 'Ukulele Ike' Edwards.

Tom 'Spats' Langham has crooned his way around the world with bands such as the 'Pasadena Roof Orchestra' and has several times sold out venues on the Artsreach circuit.

Although just a trio, the band can be seen removing three guitars, a double bass, a sousaphone, a banjo, a mandolin, two ukuleles, a clarinet, a tuba, and a pair of castanets from the band van. Expect an evening of fabulous entertainment!
