About this site

Re: some recent comments

1/"More pictures would be great, but put them in comments, not the front page."

-- I don't think this is possible.I think photos have to be posted by facilitators and have to go as a main topic (but I might be wrong: will explore some day). I post photos to www.flickr.com first, then to the blog. Others might like to try, see if it works for you.

2/ "A new comment alert would be ideal."

-- again, I don't think this is possible, but do explore the "blogger.com" site, you may find a way and can then tell everyone else

3/ There are bound to be ways of making this site better/more useful-- or even perhaps a better blog provider: if you have ideas/solutuions, post them please

Presumable you can post your pictures to www.flickr.com or any other web space and add the link to the Swanage Blog.
A comment alert would be great but as stated by anon if the index page is kept short and tidy its OK.
More readers/contributors would be good. Do people regard the site as too Lib Dem? Is there another Swanage site, with more participation, that I am unaware of?

I thought a long time ago that this site would be ideal for talk between Swange folk.

No politics, no religion. Just a place where Swanage folk could natter and enquire about folk they know.....But on reflection? I don't think it would work. We have already seen how that quickly things degenerated into mud slinging.

That is a great shame, for this town could do with a facility of that type.

DO people think the site is 'lib dem'? I always thought it had no particular bias. Although I set the site up, and facilitate, I am not party-political and haven't censored anything (except a couple of dodgy things). So the content just reflects what people want to say, with no conscious political bias at all.(There's also a forum on virtualswanage/swanageonline -- see the link below right)

and ... I don't see why the site can't be a place to talk about anything: including politics and religion...

Do you have web statistics?
How many visitors does each post get on average?

I can get some stats, but all a bit of a headache for my little brain, and I'm not sure how meaningful...

That begs the question Postman.
Why is it that so many internet sites are inhabited with "lurkers" just ordinary folk that contribute nothing towards what we find interesting?

Surely there is enough that is of interest around Swanage?

Even to things like "what did you do today" or "My families history in Swanage" "what we did on Regatta days in Prewar Swanage" So many subjects...Hobbies! a womens section? The content could be endless and of great interest to those that really love this town of ours.

There are a number of free forum programs available. The previous manifestation of the PDC website used to use one for its forum but I dont know what they use now. It would be hlpful if anyone reading this who has experience of any of them could post comments on how good they found it.

And of course nothing to stop you setting up an infinite number of blogs on any topic you choose. The only problem is managing the information.

With regards to:
"2/ "A new comment alert would be ideal."

There is a rss feed for this blog and you can add it to any rss reader to be notified of new posts.
The address you need for your rss reader is http://swanageview.blogspot.com/atom.xml

A good rss reader for windows is http://www.feedreader.com/

Except you are only alerted to new posts not new comments?

would it be possible to show the date as well as the time of new comments being made - it would be an indication of how long a topic is perceived as being interesting/relevant, and could provide some interesting end-of-year statistics
