Another voice from the timewarp, this time grumbling that the top staff of DCC are paid £119,000 a year. Out in the real world this is about as much as a regional sales manager with half a dozen staff flogging computer widgets under his command expects to pick up.

Over the last 30 years managerial salaries have shot up much faster than average earnings. Almost all the growth in spending power has gone to the best off 30%. How do you expect the public service to be immune from this? Compared with executive earnings in similar sized private businesses these earnings are paltry. If we want the highest quality people running our services we will have to pay a lot more than this in the modern market. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Um, the last post says the truth.

There was another post about about how our council tax has rocketed because of - what a pathetic phrase - "fat cat county council bosses"

It actually gave its source - for once!

The Tax Alliance.

Look at the figures - Dorset pays its Fat Cats far less than most other councils.

PLEASE go and look at the real reasons for the rise in Council Tax.

P.S. No, I'm not going to tell you.

Its a very old adage in the recruitment game that if you pay peanuts you end up hiring monkeys. You get what you pay for.

In this instance we are talking about a salary just about high enough to finance the purchase of a medium sized detached house.

For the benefit of the arithmetically challenged person who started this thread a salary of £130,000 in a county with a population of 400,000 works out at about 30p per head a year so it is no explanation of tax increases at all. There are only a tiny number of posts involved and even if the pay for all of them was cut by a third what would the difference be per person? 50p a year? I think someone is presuming on our credulity (to be polite about it).

Why do at least two of these entries look like the work of County Council staff spouting the usual defensive cliches and claptrap?
Is David Jenkins really worth 84 % of what the Prime Minister gets.
?
I think not.
Is he worth 10 or more trainee nurses?
Is he worth 6 times the national average wage?
Or more relvntly 9 or 10 times the average wage in Swanage for people who have a job within the Dorset boundaries?
I think not.
If these defensive comments were submitted by a member of the Council staff, as part of their job, we should be told, and they should not be able to hide behind anonomity.
