Swanage MIU to stay 'open all hours'

Disregarding the above tripe, it's good news week! Hot off the press from the PCT today is the following:

'Following a period of public consultation, Dorset Primary Care Trust has decided to withdraw its proposal to change the opening hours of the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Swanage Community Hospital during the night. Swanage Minor Injuries Unit will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whilst Dorset Primary Care Trust (PCT) works with NHS partners, including the Ambulance Service, local GPs, staff at the community hospital, the people of Swanage and members of local groups to review the way that healthcare in Swanage might be provided in future, particularly during the night'.

That and the Blues Festival - both in one week - perfection!!!

Think the Postman needs to edit some postings but, agreed, very good news.

Wonder if now's the time to campaign to bring back the A&E service that people seem to want at Swanage Hospital, rather than a 'minor injuries unit'

And interesting that a decision has been made before the Board meeting on 20 November where we were told the matter would be decided. Nothing to do with a possible election coming up,do you think?

NB: It doesnt say for how long the MIU will stay open 24hrs for - just WHILST the PCT works with NHS Partners, Ambulance etc. Could be a week, a month - who knows

Here's another reason to keep an A&E in Swanage ( aka MIU)

From the Echo online:
Paramedics on motorbikes because of traffic chaos (By Ceri Rees)

PARAMEDICS on motorbikes are having to cover for ambulances because of the traffic congestion caused by road works in Wareham. Two bikes have been dispatched to weave in and out of traffic on the Sandford Road where work started on Monday. The paramedics, from Dorchester Hospital, will assist Swanage and Wareham ambulance crews whose mobility has been curtailed by the severe congestion on Sandford Road, between 8am and 6pm.

I know what you're saying 7.03pm, BUT to quote from the front page of this week's Advertiser: 'For the next six to eight months Dorset PCT will be working with hospital staff, the Ambulance Service, local GPs and the Open All Hours' group on ways to improve the healthcare service in the town, particularly during the night.'

Call me naive, but, I take this as saying that the PCT realises that no changes can be sensibly made until/unless the very real issues that exist regarding Out of Hours cover are resolved. This will inevitably include a formal risk assessment because, to omit this, would surely result in litigation at some time soon.

Stil no Doctor though, so any medical decisions end up in Poole anyway.

So what we need is an A&E unit in Swanage
