Ask this question during Public Participation at any meeting of the Council. You may get an answer - you may not.

Also go to the Council's website and view upcoming Agenda to see if this subject will be discussed.

There is no chance for debate at the council meetings. There was a response at the last meeting that could not be understood or heard. It would be interesting to find out how the Town Council are going to respond. The Core Strategy could have a massive impact on the town.

Where do you think the best location is for a new supermarket?
Wareham (Large)

Swanage (Large)

Wareham + Swanage (Medium)

Other location

IMHO Concil Meetings should be arranged so that all council members face the public at all times. Turning their backs is rude and quite appalling.

A simple PA system could be the first purchase made from the sale of SBV. It would also permit all meetings to be recorded, which could be posted on the Council website.

On many occasions I have witnessed some council members ask for something inaudible to be repeated, especially from the Mayor, who is soft-spoken and tends to mumble a bit.

On this blog there are many references to road and rail transport issues and how they affect Swanage, Purbeck, and even the world (in terms of its share of the toll on climate issues).

In my twenty years in Purbeck, these very same issues have been discussed, and nothing has happened. The amount of hot air expended in these deliberations have almost certainly added to global warming!

Before another two decades pass, we need specific decisions to be made as soon as possible; ones that will result in a steady decline in the use of roads as soon as possible. Among my suggestions:

-a gradual imposition of a congestion charge (suggest the same as charged by the Sandbanks ferry) for cars and lorries entering Purbeck via the A351 and other side roads south of the Baker's Arm's (in effect, the Purbecks) once the following have been achieved:

(1) the creation of a transport interchange at Holton Heath that will included a Park and Ride, rail station (existing) and local and national coach station. Parking at the above will be free for vehicles registered in Purbeck.

(Cars registered in Purbeck and remaining in Purbeck - not traveling beyond the park and ride heading north - will not be charged the congestion fee. Leave and re-enter Purbeck - they pay.) The precedence for this is the ferry toll.

(2) Create commuter express buses (via new bus lanes) from Swanage to the Holton Heath Interchange, stopping only at Wareham Station. Local bus service to remain. This is a temporary measure, leading to:

(3) Longer term, creation of an fast electric or diesel commuter line , or even BART-type system, alongside the Swanage railway line, connecting all points by what will be, in effect, a fast overground tube service from Swanage to Holton Heath.

This is a only a start, but the reduction of the number of vehicles on Purbeck's roads plus the introduction of a viable alternative transport system will regenerate Purbeck's economy while protecting its natural beauty. It can be partially funded by the congestion charge, and be phased in over several decades.

why Holton Heath rather than Wareham please?

More land for park and ride, as well as reducing the southerly flow of traffic onto the A351 between Holton Heath and Wareham. Also better provision to upgrade the rail station, and room for other transport links to create a intermodal terminus for road (car and coach) and rail transport.

Why Wareham? There is no room for more park and ride there. I think we do not want to draw more traffic into Wareham, in any event. The Holton Heath brownfield site would serve Upton, Sandford, Wareham, Corfe, Swanage, as will as villages north, south and west of the A31. It could become a major transport link for the entire region, reducing transport costs, reducing congestion in Purbeck, and enhancing efforts to save our environment. Surely it is worth a study??
