a bit downbeat don't you think?

The comments are more interesting.

'No jobs' and 'expensive homes' seem to be the common thread.

These points are true.

I thought the piece was a reasonable reflection on Swanage and didn't think it was downbeat at all. Not much substance to it and fairly lightweight though. It's just Swanage. Let's be happy.

Yes, lets be happy, there are worse places to live and if you can't get a job, try and move. There are other nice places with a bit more employment opportunity, although everywhere is difficult right now. Don't stay and whinge.

The blogs after the article also well reflect the ambiance and character of the place, through different eyes.

I think the comment by Dodo56
actually sums it up:
"My gut feel is this is still at its heart a charming little Dorset town, but one that has rather lost its way, stuck in a timewarp between preserving its old character and catering for the needs of its visitors."

"stuck in a timewarp.."

Couldn't sum it up better. It is what makes Swanage wonderful for some people, and not so wonderful for others.

mount scar boy has suggested a false paradox. Many of our visitors come here precisely for the time warp experience. That is the need we have to cater for. There is no contradiction, old is what we are good at, it is what sells. If there is a paradox it is that the past is the way forward. The nation loves to wallow in historical melodrama and we should be giving people what they want.

Do you work in tourism or speak to a lot of tourists?

I do, and can assure you that while some of the 'old charm' of Swanage appeals, most would like to see some changes and modernisation which would benefit the town and make it more popular.

Well , I too work where tourists come to my place of work and people would like too see....

Showers along the beach. Bins on the beach or at least someone walking the beach and picking up litter. Marina. Somewhere to go when it pee's down with rain. Decent clothes shops. Decent cinema. Sports complex . Buses that run to Bournemouth after 7 o'clock. Parking meters .

And I am sure others who work where tourists talk to them have other ideas!

Sports complex I thought you were an advocate of outdoor persuits Dave which we hav an abundance of.

Buses to Bournemouth is good parking meters no way charges are enough now.

I am indeed , though you do get those fitness types that like to keep fit , surrounded by electronic gadgets ie running machines , rowing machines. But nothing beats excerise for me out in the great outdoors;)

And for me parking meters all the way along the seafront should be a option to think about , that way the miracle miles goes and everyone gets to park along the seafront and enjoy the view including camper vans. Plus the money from these meters should go to our town council;)
