In future, can you please head your postings "Elitist NIMBY" so we all know to ignore them. The vast majority of negative posts probably are from you, so it won't leave us much to read.

Or else "Do As I Say, Not As I Do" ! Are you really suggesting that most Swanage parents should continue to have no choice whatsoever but meekly accept their children being bussed to Wareham each day to attend the worst school in Dorset (by exam results), whilst yours receive a privileged education somewhere else? Talk about bare-faced cheek. I see now why you're not prepared to come out of hiding and express such views openly.

Come on guys, can we just stick to reasoned, fair, debate? This endless mudslinging and petty bickering just devalues the whole debate and diminishes the credibility of all who participate in it. The posts on this topic are becoming an embarrassing indictment of small-town mentality. If this carries on, the thread and forum for debate will just be removed.

Anon @ 2.32, how do you know the post above yours has not chosen to home educate?

Hi 2.32, it's amazing how people on here can read the worst into anything.

Yes, I'm hopeful that my children are bright enough for Grammar school but I'm quite happy for them to make their way there using public transport unless of course, it was possible for them to go with someone working nearby.

You assume however that the Swanage School will be in my back yard and I therefore oppose it which is an incorrect assumption. I merely raised an opinion as to whether an aspirational travel policy may be valid in the real circumstances the Swanage School might face.

This however is exactly why I amongst others, prefer to remain anonymous as it doesn't appear to be possible to have an opinion on the Swanage School that doesn't toe the line without being branded a traitor to Swanage

Hi 2.38 and 2.51

Again, reading the worst into anything!

For the record, I have made no negative comments surrounding the Swanage School, I have simply expressed my opinion regarding what I regard as an aspirational travel policy.

I shall probably stick to reading rather than posting from now on so you don't need to worry about my Elitist NIMBY opinion :-)

Yes, most of the people I speak to think it is not a good idea. Some are a good deal more forthright in their terms. Teachers tend to snigger and then burst out laughing. Perhaps I meet the people who look at it in factual terms rather than emote about it or take the "puffs", visions and unsupported claims on the ES website literally.

Mr Postman,

You are right. Can we have some reasoned argument please. 10 reasons to expect TSS to deliver a good education perhaps. You supporters must know of some. I can then post 10 reasoes why I think it will not.

Anonymous said...

The fact that there was about 300 signatures of parents interested in the school on their opening night;) that's enough evidence for me that folk in Swanage want a change :)

"The fact is that throughout this saga ES have been unable to show any evidence that having a school here will be better for education"

well it would have to be pretty bad to get worse results than TPS.

With whatever respect I can muster let me say that "X million people can't be wrong" arguments are nonsense. Some frightening number of millions of Americans think the universe was created in 6 days a few thousand years ago and evolution does not exist. However many Swanage paople want a school here is not evidence that the proposed 400 pupil one will be any advantage over the existing arrangement. If ES supporters think a headcount of the number of people who expressed an interest in the school is evidence that it will be any good then clearly they do not understand what is meant by evidence and there is no chance of a reasoned discussion.

This forum is an utterly useless place for reasoned discussion. Any anonymous poster can make up any pro or anti 'facts' (such as 'most people i speak to are against' or 'most people i speak to are for') and it is completely meaningless.

The real fact is that Education Swanage have run a lot of consultations since 2009 and are always very willing to answer questions in person and by email and on Facebook. If you talk to them instead of asking questions here they will reply - they are real people with names and faces, not anonymous typists!

If some people don't like what the various consultations have led to, then fine, but stop the cynical griping and moaning and accept that some people are willing to do their best for others and work very hard at it.

The way most people on this horrible forum go on you'd think this was the worst place in the world to live but that it should never change!

'This forum is an utterly useless place for reasoned discussion': Only if someone is typing something you don't want to see! The ES consultations could equally be seen as useless because nobody feels they can object in any way to the school because of the backlash from people who think it will be the best thing since sliced bread. Many people have sensible reasoned arguments for not wanting a school in Swanage and do not use cynical griping and moaning. Your last sentence, 'the way most people on this horrible forum go on...' could also be concluded from what ES supporters are saying here!! You too are contributing anonymously to this 'horrible forum' as you call it!

The majority of the town is agnostic as far as its opinion of a new school.

Most are well past those years when they had to worry about their kids' education.

I haven't seen a reasoned argument based on fact on this forum, just opinions. Opinions are fine, but they're not facts. Mind you, the ES website is all about plans, so you could argue that these are not 'facts' yet either, but at least they are evidence based, not just opinion.

ES supporters, by the way, are trying to make the town better, not moaning about everything! Plus, 2.36, I see posters, badges and bags all over the place in town. Evidence please to say that your opinion is not in the minority!

Anonymous said...

If you express opposition, uncertainty or indifference to these plans and you are a parent, one or all of the following things will happen:

*ES will phone/ FB/ bother you to change your mind
*You'll be told that you don't value your community by internet strangers, (as if community somehow begins and ends at Corfe gap)

If you question the credibility of ES's plans and use a name, one or all of these things will happen:

*You'll be banned from their site
*Your employers will be contacted by ES
*You'll be publically branded as a leftie loonie
*Anonymous people will slate you ad nauseum on the internet

Fact, not opinion, as anyone who has been following this saga will be able to testify. The sad result of all this is that any hope of reasoned open discussion has been long since lost. Any debate about the education of our youngsters is rendered down to Swanage Good, Rest of World Bad.

Posters and banners can and have been put up anywhere by ES, this does not constitute evidence of the majority of people supporting the school it just shows that ES are handy with the sticky tape. I never claimed my opinion was in the majority so don't have to give evidence to say that it is not in the minority. I have no idea on this issue just think it is unwise to make sweeping statements like'the majority of people in the town love the idea' if you cannot back it up!!

Once again, this thread seems to be getting out of hand, with unpleasant accusations and personal insults being slung around, all the worse because made under the cloak of anonymity. Can I ask people to stick to objective debate, otherwise I think we'll just have to close the thread, which would be a shame for those who want genuine discussion or would like to know more.
Thanks. Mike Hadley

For all our sakes, not least the good reputation of Swanage and its residents, please close it down. It's pointless, futile, boringly repetitive and panders to people who hold entrenched views but are not prepared to make them in public. No-one benefits from this rubbish. Either insist on people posting in their own name (and so self-editing) or stop it altogether.

Haha your all a joke fighting and squabbling amongst yourself like a bunch of spoilt little brats, I look back at this whole saga and think is it really that bad to actually come up with idea for a school. Wherever it may be , really? And to build it ? No its not .As far as I see it , it's a good thing , why? Because its a education! Plain and simple.

I went to the TPS and for the intermediate year and senior year I learned diddly squat , I hated it . Though I applied for sixth form and loved every bit of it , and because of the course I did at sixth form I went onto college:) to be honest I would like something different for my kids , and school which is just up the road and that extra lie in for me and my kids is sounds tempting too :) , it's supports the local community even if some of you's don't think there is any:( , it's a fresh start there's no history , different ideas , different goals , it puts a whole a new perception on things , it's breaths something fresh into the town. I could go on , ahh also newly appointed teachers and staff will have loads of postive energy as its a new school which they are going to build up along the way. I personally cannot think of anything better. The support and people in town who have so much to offer are actually offering to help from football coaches , gardeners , chefs , cyclists , people from the building trades , people who have a trade really that want to carry it over to the children of the school. And this is a pleasing and joyfull sight to see. Also it makes my kids and I proud that we live in such a town with some caring people , people who are willing to roll up sleeves and get stuck in. That's what I want from it , don't want negativity , moaners , slackers who basically can't be doing with change. The worlds a changing fast and I like change and there lies challenges ahead , though without change and challenges life would be pretty dull and boring.

It’s disappointing - but not that surprising – that all debate on this subject has dried up following the removal of the anonymous option for posting comments. This is a shame as many parents continue to be very concerned about the future provision of secondary education in Swanage and Wareham. Leaders of the schools involved – and the Education Swanage team in particular – may find some of the points raised uncomfortable reading or unduly negative. However, I have to say that in my opinion it’s good that these are being raised.

DF, part of me admires your enthusiasm and vision in your post above. However, there is simply no way that I can consider treating my current Year 8 child as a guinea pig and send him to a school which doesn’t even exist yet, never mind have a proven track record. I can understand why parents of younger children may wish to ‘hedge their bets’ though.
