New Arts for Swanage.

I'd like to propose the setting up a fund for the development of new arts projects in Swanage. This would help those young artists who invariabley have to move away from the area to make their mark and also to help those practitioners who do stay and then have few resources for interesting new work. Although Dorset and Purbeck has its share of good amateur art this does not encourage those who are trying to do more than have fun. There is now a number of interesting new initiatives which could help provide money and resources. These include the Weymouth Olympic Bid, the Arts Council Activate Project in Dorset and, of course, The Jurassic Park stuff. All we have to do is to ask....

Me? I would settle for a decent road in and out, before starting with the arts.

The road seems OK to me. I use it to get to work every day. Anyway, ask the roads people for road money and I'll the ask the arts people for some arts money.

Whilst were at it we need to look for resources to get the Art Gallery, the Studio Theatre and the Arts Workshops up and running. Swanage has been shamefully neglected in these and we have never received our fair share of Arts Development money. All we need to do is to get together....

OK, I'm not looking for infrastructure; rather funds to develop talent and ideas. But say somebody did come up with money for premises, where would we locate it. Gallery space, workshop space and studio theatre space. Any ideas?

Ha! You've nearly convinced me to give up but I've still got a flicker of interest. I agree what you say about premises but I still think the most important thing is to promote ideas. Just a few quid to encourage people to have a go.

By the way, the arts have no need of justification. They are a fundamental part of a civilised society. Otherwise we may as well all top ourselves now.

Swanage has a perfectly good theatre/cinema/arts centre. The problem is it is run by a self appointing oligarchy with absolutely no accountablity to the people of Swanage. Its high time the Mowlem was made a membership organisation with a remit to promote the arts instead of being a commercial theatre masquerading as a Victorian mechanics institute.

It does seem odd that the Mowlem is a registered charity, designated as a library (!) and reading room (! )for the benefit of the people of Swanage

The Trustees of The Mowlem do a very good job maintaining the Trust for the purpose for which it was set up. This does not include provision of the arts. If we need a new approach and provision for the arts we must set up a new organisation with new money.

Have a look at www.eastdorsetarts.org
Its new and has listings for all the local arts organisations. I'm sure they'd love to get people involved over this way

Yes, there are a lot of organisations which could help us (and have resources)but in the past Swanage has missed out because we have not been able to put a clear case together. Anybody like to start a New Arts for Swanage group (apart from me, that is)?
