The bay & beach

Just been down this weekend for a flying visit from "oop north" and I've got some questions:-
1/ Why was there not a single boat in the bay? Ther were no boats in the water either side of the pier.
2/ Where is all the scum at the waters edge coming from ? I have never seen this @ Swanage in 30 years. Is it related to the beach works?
3/ I understood from the contractor's website that the existing groynes were to be removed. A number of them appear to have been buried, Is this correct?
4/ The quality of the replacement sand is inferior to the existing sand.It has lots of shell fragmments and pebbles in it, and I would think not as suitable for children as previously.
Any answers appreciated.

1/ Freezing gale force north-easterly winds tend to make it a tad miserable on the water in the winter! Though I did see three people wind-surfing on Saturday.
2/The scum is wind-blown spume whipped up by the wind: nothing nasty about it all (but great for kids to jump in)
3/I believe some groynes have been removed already, and others will be - though I can't see it would hurt to leave remaining ones in: could only help retain sand, and the old structures can look quite attractive
4/IMHO, the sand is magnificent, and a few shells and pebbles just add some interest.

Further to the above article....anyone leaving a boat moored in a NE would find it in little bits !! which would explain the absence of them

Thanks for that. How does it work with the boats? Is there a weather warning and then EVERYBODY is able to get their boat out of the water?
Seems unlikely to me,but I will bow to superior nautical knowledge.
Also, I have to disagree about the sand quality, I don't think it is very child friendly

Boat owners listen to the shipping forcast. There is also a rule of thumb that says if the fishing boats move then so do you.

I didn't find the explanation, last week, about the lack of boats in the water convincing, and looking around the web camera today, there are, as far as I can tell, still no boats in the bay.
Why?

If you take a look at Lyme Regis, Bridport, Lymington and the like, you will find they are busy still at this time of year with commercial and even some pleasure craft. The difference is those Towns have harbour walls. Chandlers, fishmongers, cafes and other vendors flourish all year around in the vicinity.
