Literary locals

In my view there are not enough outlets for Swanage folk to read and enjoy the poetry, the stories, and articles created and written by Swanage folk.

For here it seems to me, is a very large untapped source of local history, poetry and verse. A host of interesting tales and stories from our own people: Swanage Folk.

That begs the guestion..Are there any Clubs, Associations or Societies, that can provide space for this local talent?

I am surprised that Swanage library doesn't even keep a section for local authors. They may get the books in, but then sell them off/throw them out later. I once asked Dorset County Council and just got a 'policy' letter. Perhaps if more people expressed interest? Ot what the Mowlem as a repository: it's billed as 'reading room' after all in its charter.

I would also add that by the lack of an outlet to local writers. We are fast losing our own local history.

For example, when I was a young boy my father showed me how to sing old Dorset folk songs. They through lack of use, now remain just a few faintly recalled snatches.

The same applies to the WW2 Veterans. When they go, they take it all with them.

Our Swanage Veterans must have some great tales to tell.

Me Keith? Too old to organise anything. I had hopes that some "Arts" group would have picked up on this opening for exploiting our local talent?

You're absolutely right, Brian. I hope that as soon as we can get enough people interested in the arts project we can follow up on such ideas. Meanwhile, we are looking into the possibility of finding small spaces for music and readings. If there is anyone out there who would like to help organise such a thing please make yourself known. The discussion about the arts project is back in the January archive on this site and I am continuing it on the Bogsite www.cultureswanage.blogspot.com/

Good to know that there's a Swanage arts Bogsite. Can't think of a better place for most of it.

Thats odd, none of the local artists produce anything at all like Marcel Duchamps famous "Fountain" of 1917.
