Natural England is now consulting on its proposed new Marine Conservation Zones

Natural England, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and the Countryside Council for Wales are undertaking a formal consultation on 10 possible marine Special Areas of Conservation and 2 potential Special Protection Areas in English, Welsh and offshore waters around the UK.

When I was a kid you took eight portions off a plaice. Nobody ate a whole Dover sole, a crab served at least four, Poole Bay was full of huge flounders and eels were a menace. No longer. Much stronger action is required if fisheries are to recover.

I don't know if anon142 has read the proposals or was at the meeting in the Town Hall. But I was at the meeting, and my understanding was that Natural England say things are pretty good as they are in the key areas. But they must be kept that way, and it should be OK for existing activity to be allowed to continue. I think the main concerns of fishermen are that 'they' will move the goalposts later and start imposing stricter controls than they are presently indicating.

OMG - I can't be bothered to wadw through all that nonsense. Sounds like a lot of jobsworth at Whitehall to me.

Can the few fishing boats out of Swanage possibly harm local fish stocks? Get a grip. These people know whats good for them and they can manage their fishing zones better than any mandarin in Whitehall with a BA in PE from Loughborough who passed some civil service exam.

See it's simple - our lads know if they overfish, they don't feed their kiddies next year. Get it?

Who will you trust?

How nice to know our fishermen are unique. All the rest grab everything they can - hence the need to do something to conserve stocks. I can't say I have met these concerned fishermen. All the ones I speak to think they should catch everything they can before somebody else does and fondly imagine there will always be more. Fishing is a very uncertain business and you do not go into it if you are the sort of person who likes a planned life and calculates the outcome of every action.

Funny - you can replace 'fish' with variations of 'money' and 'fishermen' with 'banker', and the previous post still makes sense:

"How nice to know our bankers are unique. All the rest grab all the money they can - hence the need to do something to conserve cash. I can't say I have met these concerned bankers. All the ones I speak to think they should grab every bit of money they can before somebody else does and fondly imagine there will always be more. Banking is a very uncertain business and you do not go into it if you are the sort of person who likes a planned life and calculates the outcome of every action."

Would it work for 'politicians in place of 'banker' too?
